Max processor for Gigabyte AMD motherboard

Greetings,

I have a Gigabyte GA-MA69VM-S2 motherboard, flashed to Bios F10E, currently with an AMD 64 x2 5000+ cpu. I'd like to upgrade to a faster processor.

Info on motherboard here: http://www.gigabyte.us/Products/Motherboard/Products_Spec.aspx?ProductID=2500

A "CPU Support List" is shown here: http://www.gigabyte.us/Support/Motherboard/CPUSupport_Model.aspx?ProductID=2500&ver=

I've read the notes on how the system will configure if an AM2+ cpu is installed - question is, can I assume the same if I install an AM3 cpu as well? I'm assuming an AM3 cpu would be supported, otherwise why even list support and which BIOSes can be applied? That said, I would think that the Phenom II x4 945 would be the highest the motherboard can support, but I'd like a 2nd opinion (or 3rd or 4th) before I plunk down some cash.

Thanks!
