Max Payne 3: Do I actually ever get to play

I feel like 80% of the time I am not given any control over what's going on in the game.

Even walking around a corner or through a door has been made into cutscenes.

I like the parts where I get to play, but this shit makes the game horrible.

I know what you mean, feel the same way. Was disappointed by the sheer amount of cut scenes

Same arguments made when the second came out, yet the game is remembered fondly. There was a whole level in 2, where you literally walked slowly like you were drunk/stoned with all kinds of post-processing effects, with a bunch of cut scenes, and no gun battles at all (or maybe 1 shot, I forget).

Normally I can't stand cutscene-heavy games, but the gun battles made up for the 'film noir' infection. Just bought 3 during the Autumn sale, but busy playing Mark of the Ninja atm.

its not that bad, but yes...there are A LOT of cutscenes... sometimes it doesnt make sense (like... CUTSCENE -> you are given control to walk in a straight line to the next door -> CUTSCENE), but there are some parts in which you play a good chunk without long cutscenes (and i said long...cause probably there will be some short ones)

its a pretty enjoyable game nevertheless, for me at least.

They can be intrusive, but overall they add to the style of the game which is very well done. My problem with the game is that I am having very difficult times even on Normal difficulty. I just got the game a couple weeks ago and am thinking of restarting on Easy, cause I find myself needing to psyche up before playing. :|

The gameplay to cutscene ratio at the beginning of the game is really annoying. After a little while (post stadium level iirc) they find the right blend and there's a lot more gameplay. So basically, hang in there for a while and you'll enjoy a really good game.

I'm like OP. I absolutely despise cutscenes in 99% of games. For all intense and purposes, Max Payne 3 should be my most hated game of all time...

...but it turns out I actually loved Max Payne 3. Probably because it used cutscenes in the best possible way: To tell an awesome, engaging story of revenge and deceit. It also helped that the cutscenes actually played over the loading screens. In fact I don't think there's a single loading screen in all of MP3. Just a fluid, non-stop 10 hour long thrill ride.

So while I usually hate cutscenes, I can forgive MP3 because it's like playing an interactive version of Man on Fire. Which is fucking awesome.

Best game of 2012 for me so far. When cutscenes are done so right, like in MP3, I can't complain about it. I was also pleasantly surprised at how fun the multiplayer is.

Well, fired it up today, and played straight through to the 5th chapter in one sitting, never feeling like 'would this cutscene end'. Rockstar did a killer job making it all seamless.

360 controller works best for everything but aiming, so switched to mouse/kb. Too bad hardcoded keys in the game (enter, home), as an arrow user are prime keys I use, so I'd knock off a full letter grade just for that... why games from ten years ago let you bind whatever the hell you want, and games cant do that today supersedes my gripes about cutscenes.

However the map design from 2010 has way more detail going on in it than those brick walled, empty rooms full of mindless monsters from 1993.

I definitely feel the cutscenes are intrusive. Especially when it is obvious the cutscene is over, but the game will wait for 1 or 2 seconds before giving you control.

I feel like the Max voiceover is fine, but it happens waaay to often, so much so that the cheesy dialogue gets very annoying, and very repetitive.

One think about the cut scenes, if I had my shotgun out when I opened the door. When the cut scene started literally a second later I all of sudden have my pistol out. Things like this in games annoy me to no end.

I agree there are too many cutscenes in games today, but I loved Max Payne 3 I thought it handled them without being TOO intrusive, and the gameplay was great... it also felt like a real solid sequel, true to the series.

I very much miss the simplicity and pure fun of Quake 1, Doom... etc, but there are far worse offenders of the ailments of modern games for you to target than Max Payne 3.

Another port fail. Great game, impossible to proceed due to port issues... I get to a freakin stupid quicktime event (ugh), that has a bunch of parts, and since I rebound the keys to what I wanted, all of the messages say things like "Hit to kick" without the key shown that does 'kick', and of course nothing in the settings for 'kick'.

Tried hitting every key on my keyboard and mouse buttons; no idea what kick is, nor the one after that, that I got to once, is actually bound to...

I played through MP3, and it didn't leave much of an impression on me. It was pretty generic and often frustrating. The voiceovers were overwrought and annoying, and not in the fresh 'noir" style the earlier games had. I was so tired of hearing him bitch by the end. Combat was boring hide-and-peek with waves of stupid bad guys and was incredibly frustrating trying to figure out where I was being shot from.

I did think the brazil ghetto level was cool and well designed. That's pretty much the only positive I remember.
