About to purchase a E6420 and was wondering if I should get a cooler with it or stick with stock cooling.

How much overclock could I expect on stock cooling and potentially how much more could I get with an aftermarket cooler?

Thanks for any info.

If you're gonna be on stock cooling I wouldn't push it any further than 2.6. If you want to be able to push it to 3.2-3.4 get an aftermarket cooler.

I have an e6400 OC'd to 3ghz on stock cooling (@1.325v). And it runs cool. Idles low to mid 30's, loads low to mid 40's.

Of course temps will significantly be affected by CPU voltage and case cooling. Try to keep the CPU voltage as low as possible (i.e., never use auto voltage which jacks it up higher than necessary). I also have a 120mmm exahust fan high up in the case, which in my experience is more effective than intake fans. ;)

I would drop 50 bucks and buy the Zerotherm BTF90 and a tube of arctic silver from newegg. It keeps my CPU at 27C idle and 35C to 37C full load( 25C ambient room temperature).
