That's not too much. 2GB is about right. I'm familiar with the Pentium M. Your memory limit is up to your chipset. However since it's only a 32bit CPU you're limited to under 4GB... in the real world it's usually between 3 to 3.5 GB. As long as I can remember nearly all Centrinos during that era max out at 2GB. Also from what i remember, that 2GB may not work well or at all. You'll want two 1GB sticks since you want to run dual channel.

I had a M740 in my laptop (in sig below) before I updated it, I have 2x 1GB Crucial DDR2 in it now (up from 1x 512MB,) but I put that in as part of the upgrade when I replaced the CPU, so I don't know if it would work with a single stick of 2GB, but I don't see why not.

...stab it in and try...

Go to Crucial and search memory upgrades for your specific laptop.

my thought as well: 1gb and 1gb. how many timing tables would a high end cas-4 667 have? I'd assume 3-4, given it is mobile. The one a clocking down, the one w/ compatible timings below sold speed, the reported timings, and maybe a clock bracket ahead. Will a potion of this at least show up- no damage form trying, right? Which is better: 2x512mb, 1x2gb, 1x2gb + 1x512mb? 2.5gb? CPU-Z says dual channel, but no synchronicity. I am running crystalcpuid on the dothan 1.73ghz single-core and the installed memory is steady at 141mhz(x2 right?), 266mhz, and one other speed runnign at 4-4-4-12.

Yes, 141MHz x2...

I would probably just try the 2GB card by itself, I don't think I would mix-n-match the sizes.

FWIW, I got that nice 2x 1GB Crucial DDR2 from the 'egg for about $30 delivered, and no problems. That and the faster processor really, really helped the old tired lappy out.

like butter.
that single-core chip reads ~50% memory usage of 2gb- 266MHz at 4-3-3-10 according to cpu-z. only one dimm populated- single channel mode. dare I see if it have do dual-channel asynchronously with a 2gb and a 512mb?

You could try it... I have something like that in my old Dell Pentium D... 3x 512GB and 1x 1GB... just to fill every slot. ;)

Hopefully you will get the same response I did... it's like a new computer. I bought another set for my mom's Vaio... she's stuck with a 1.60GHz T2050... and needs all the help she can get.

cpu-z reads it, but neither bios nor the xp installation see 2.5gb. Though, in the "sys info" display, it reads PAE, so wouldn't the range of addressing be closer to 3+gb? Chipset limitation?

I pulled mine up... (laptop in sig) and I get dual channel in CPUz, but that's with 2x 1GB, 4,4,4,12 @ 266MHz.

That's with the 770 CPU, not the 740, obviously, and with 2 cards. I don't recall what it said when I only had the one 512MB card in, but I'm almost positive it was still dual channel.
