Max fan speed appears to be 6000rpm but I can only get it to hit 3000, what am I missing?

4400+
DFI SLI-DR
Mushkin 2x1gb HP PC3200
BFG 7800GTX
Raptor on SATA channel 4
Audigy 2 zs

I'm using the Thermaltake A1772 which lists it's RPM at 6000 when the CPU gets above 42c.

However, I've been Prime95ing and it never goes above the base of 3500.... I lowered the "Fan on Full" threshold in the DFI bios to 29c and it still sticks at 3500...

What to do??

(Also my temps are not acceptable at this current fan speed. Need to OC more.)

I did, I'm trying to find a faq to understand it in order to use it but haven't yet

Are you using something like a fanmate to undervolt in addition to the BIOS speed control? If you are, you need to remove the fanmate.

Can I plug in the fan connector that goes from Fan to "CPU Fan" socket on Mobo to the "Fan 2" connector to see if it allows a change then?

I tried it to see if anything would change and nothing, still 3500....

Is it possible the fan is not getting enough power? If so, what should be changed??????

Using the Fan Speed utility of Smart Guardian I'm able to get the fan to go DOWN from 3500 but when the bar is set at highest it runs at 3500...it again should be at 6000....

Any help is greatly appreciated!!

Could it be that the fan is not getting enough power? If so what should be changed?

Or:

Flash a new bios?

You can't control it. The temperature is monitored by the fan itself. My suggestion would be to RMA it back to Monarch and buy the thermaltake Venus 12 for 33 dollars shipped. You know this by putting a huge kitchen fan next to the heatskink/fan. The rpm will suddenly drop, but the temps won't drop.

I really hope this isn't the case.

If so, I'm pissed as hell at Monarch and sick of their sh*t.

I canceled an order with them 2 weeks ago for some ram and psu for 400 dollars, and they never refunded me

(spoken to them since they said they will refund and the money will show up at the end of the week. It better.)

So either I'm out of a comp for 2-4 weeks for RMA OR I'm out 40 bucks for the POS fan either way thanks to Monarch. Unless they just let me send the fan back.

:disgust: :| :|

I hope it is just something else.

I had a Thermaltake Venus 7+ that was suppose to go to 6000 RPM on high temps and slow down to 3000 ish when it is low. The thing is sitting in a box in my closet now...

Are you saying yours did not ramp up to 6000 either? Or you haven't done anything with it yet?

can the mobo supply enough voltage from he header to spin it at 6000 rpm?

theres a thread at dfi.street on that, i'll see if i can find it.

also, you've used the software and automatic settings in ITE?

here ya go-

RGone...

doesn't look like it would provide the juice. probably a fan controller is in your future :p

Yea sorry that didn't make much sense ahha. I experienced the same thing as you.
I only used it for awhile on an A64 Epox motherboard. I contacted TT and they said there wasa switch or something on it. I email them back and said there was not... They said okay then it is defective.

I never bothered to return it because they didn't ever tell me how to RMA to them and I just bought a Zalman HSF instead.

Mine was from monarch, they better make good on it because they either promised me a compatible machine which means a fan that the mobo can actually run at the proper speed or a fan that isn't defective.

I guess I'll have to order a new fan... how tough is it to put on a fan? (I'm going to get a better one anyway then.)

I'm nervous lol because this is the only thing I've never done comp building wise.

I'm going to get some artic silver TG too

Hey rise, what type of cooling are you using?

i have the 7000cu in a praetorian case. 2x80mm intakes provide nice intake air over the chipset area although i wish this case used 120mm fans instead of the 4 80mms

i may replace the chipset fan with the iceberg pro. the 7800 has heated up that area a bit on me.

and i know you only wanted to know about the cpu but what the hell :)

I wouldn't try running a 6,000 RPM fan from a mobo header. My old Delta 60mm ate a mobo header once, and now I never plug anything into the mobo. You should try a 3-pin->4-pin adaptor and plug it directly to the PSU.

Interesting idea... the sole cable plugging into the mobo is for power then? I actually assumed it was for fan control/detection...

It shouldnt cause problems if I plug it into the PSU and its no longer plugged into the CPU slot for mobo bios benefit? :) thanks

Still researching but thinking about getting the XP90c and some artic silver which seems to be a big hit on xtremeforums

It can be for both power and control/detection, depending on the fan. If there's 3 actual wires, it has speed monitoring and control, but if there's only two, it's only for power. I once made an adaptor of my own that connected the power wires to a Molex (4-pin) and the single tach wire to a 3-pin connector. You can find these adaptors for $7 on Newegg. Cheap insurance, imo.

If you want temperature control and power from PSU you should disconnect the 12V and ground from the 3 pin con and solder them to a molex. I have a TT case fan that came with only the RPM cable connected to the 3 pin con.

EDIT: Damn, too late

Hmmmmm

So I can buy the 3-4 pin adaptor and then simply plug the fan's wires into it so it has enough power. Thanks man.

I'm also thinking of upgrading to the Thermalright XP-90 w/ some type of fan as well.

yeah, i used one of those 3-4 pin adapters before. works fine. i put mine on a fan controller so i could control the speed and monitor the rpms through the mobo header.

if i had an x2, or actually even with my 3700 @2750, i wish i had bought the xp-90. i like the zalman but its not as good from what i've seen people getting for temps at dfi.street.
