I heard that the maximum amount of RAM that any mobo can actually use is 4 Gigs. Can someon shed any light on if this has changed?

They are many mobos that go way beyond 4gb. Tyan makes one that can take 16gb of ram. It is also a dual socket 939 mobo so can actually take 2 dual-core AMD cpus and in theory have 4 cores and 16 gb of ram. Now that is sweet.

OK i was just making sure, becuase i'm at work now and we have some IBM IntelliStation Z pros. With dual sock 939 proc and 12 gigs of ram in them... but for some reason its not registering all the ram... gotta love the works budget 25K for 3 computers towers only! haha Anyway Its only registering 2.75 gigs!?!??!! The ram is in Gig sticks of PC2-3200 CL3 ECC DDR2 SDRAM RDIMM with 1.8 voltage ( yes its like 400 dollars for just 2 gigs and there are 12 gigs) You guyz have any ideas as to why it is only recognizing 2.75 gigs?

Is the BIOS not recognizing or the OS? WinX will not recognize over 2.75.

what do you mean it wont utilize it? So its pointless to go over 2.5 gigs? And if so what OS will utilize it

 If windows can't utilize it, what is the point in having 12gb of ram? Get another operating system.

Windows XP Pro is a 32 bit operating system that can never use more than 4GB of RAM. In practical cases, the maximum that it can see is somewhat less than this due to how the x86 architecture works. All of that RAM is pointless unless the OS can see it, in which case you should choose a proper OS for the systems: Windows XP x64 if they'll be used as workstations, Windows 2003 Server x64 if they're going to function as servers, or some 64-bit Linux distribution if you're feeling like something a bit different.

You can send me 8 gigs of ram if you feel that way, because it won't be doing you any good

LOL this reminds me of the person that was running Win98 on a dual pentium pro system because NT was too complicated.

Another thing is that those are server motherboards that take Xeon and Opteron processors. You can still get them in ATX form factor, but they're not the best for desktop use.

^ QFT. Why waste the memory? XP 64 is cheap compared to that expensive ram.

I cant use XP 64, the OS is on an Image for the corporation. I have no choice in the matter. The RAM is already purchased, but i can always throw it into a server that we have, i just want to know how much will the computers be able to hold with the current OS. BTW money is not an object lmao ur talking about a Multi Billion Dollars company.

so 3 gigs then?

Lol btw thanks anyway now i know what to watch out for on my own personal compys :p

that would make more sense. with ms, you can upgrade your license to x64 for free, but you lose the 32bit one. the regular windows xp pro can only recognize ~3GB of ram max. Just get your it guys to get you an image of windows x64. why waste all the ram?

Ok well regardless of the political issues of the company i work for, i could care less if they waste their money.

But i do have a question. What exactly is the difference between the X64 and X32? Are there any limitations if you upgrade to X64? like not being able to run specific programs etc?

Thanks everyone for the answers
