If I wanted to upgrade a mac with a third party SSD to mavericks (but not yosemite) am I SOL as far as getting the installer from Apple unless one of my friends happens to have a USB/DVD installer they made?

What OS is currently on the Mac in question?

They are two macs actually. A 2008 Macbook Pro, and a 2008 Macbook, both currently running Snow Leopard (10.6.8, I'm pretty sure).

Goal is to not run into any trouble with third party SSDs but keep getting security updates.

I don't know for sure if you're able to just download Mavericks from the MAS, but the fact that you have 3rd party SSDs shouldn't be a limiting factor here.

If Mavericks, you'll want to install a TRIM enabler, if the drives don't have GC built in.

I am not excited about the fact that you have to disable global kext signing in order to be able to use Trim Enabler in yosemite. I know that's probably whiny and not a real problem in practice, but I'd like to not have to deal with possibly bricking an install if I reset the nvram without turning off Trim.

The MAS seems to only want to let them download Yosemite.

Just hit one of the hackintosh sites and download it, as you can't really get Mavericks from the app store anymore. Is there any reason why you don't want to use Yosemite?

Nevermind guys! A friend of mine once downloaded Mavericks so they can re-download the Mavericks installer from their "Purchased" tab in the MAS, so I think that lets me do exactly what I wanted to do!

Seems like your problem is solved but FWIW, you should be able to sign in to the App Store and under "Purchases" Mavericks should be available to download.

At least that is the way it is currently working for me running the latest version of Yosemite.

That's only if you had 'purchased' it, I think. If you are sitting on Snow Leopard, probably all you'll see is Yosemite.

That is exactly the case. Luckily another friend of mine had upgraded to Mavericks, so I can make an installer by having them re-download it.
