Looking for advice on a new build. I suppose I'll make it easier and answer the questions in the sticky...
1. What YOUR PC will be used for. That means what types of tasks you'll be performing.
Primarily gaming, plus random web browsing (primarily forums and YouTube). Potentially other tasks, but nothing that really affects the choice of hardware (Python, pentesting, etc)
2. What YOUR budget is. A price range is acceptable as long as it's not more than a 20% spread.
As much as needed, as little as possible. Realistically, I'm looking at around $2k when all is said and done. Less is more, but I also build a computer about once every 6-10 years, so I'm not looking to skimp on a budget build, either.
3. What country YOU will be buying YOUR parts from.
'murica, yeah.
5. IF YOU have a brand preference. That means, are you an Intel-Fanboy, AMD-Fanboy, ATI-Fanboy, nVidia-Fanboy, Seagate-Fanboy, WD-Fanboy, etc.
Intel/nVidia, I'm done with AMD/ATI's crap and I'm not waiting to see if Zen is a real live unicorn. Slight preference for Seagate/Crucial on the storage side, but fanboy is a stretch.
6. If YOU intend on using any of YOUR current parts, and if so, what those parts are.
Noooooppeeeee. Well, my mouse...
7. IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds.
No overclocking, unless I win the lotto.
8. What resolution, not monitor size, will you be using?
Looking at 2K@144Hz. 4k gaming isn't viable in my budget or build. A second monitor may be in my future if the card can run it, but not a need, or immediate plan.
9. WHEN do you plan to build it?
Note that it is usually not cost or time effective to choose your build more than a month before you actually plan to be using it.
Hopefully start purchasing by the end of February, depending on taxes, etc.
10. Do you need to purchase any software to go with the system, such as Windows or Blu Ray playback software?
Windows, only thing I can think of. Currently on a borrowed license of Win7 Home Premium.
All that said... I do have two current potential builds. I was ready to start purchasing as soon as budget allowed, up until about 12 hours ago. Then I started talking with someone about the build, and we got into Haswell-E, mITX, etc, etc. So, first up is my initial plan. Some parts are placeholders.

Placeholders: Motherboard (Asus E3 V5's aren't available yet, except for the Pro Gaming). CPU Cooler (TD-02-SLIM isn't on PCPP).

I forgot you could do custom items, so no real placeholders here. Just the case and motherboard.
If you made it this far, you probably noticed that neither build has any storage. That's because I'm trying not to talk myself into SSD's. I need around 2TB total space, which makes SSD's really pricey ($500-600). I'm on 10 year old Seagate platters now, so the laptop platters I'm looking at for the ITX build (HGST 7K1000's) would be an improvement over what I have now in virtually every way (nearly double the streaming throughput, IOPS benchmarks didn't exist when my drives were made but, seek times look to be about the same if not better on the newer drives). I want SSD's, I just don't think I can justify the price, with total cost being as high as it is already.
The only specific questions I have are... Is that i7 really viable in that case/mobo combo (second link)? The Dynatron cooler is basically my only option due to the socket plus height limitation (Narrow ILM, very few coolers work on it, 58mm height limit). Volume wise, it's only a couple decibels louder than an original H100 in a push/pull config (I'm on a push-only H100 now, plus 4 more fans), but I expect it to be a higher pitch. Pitch doesn't necessarily bother me (tinnitus, yo), but I'd have to hear it in person to really know for certain.
Right now, I'm really leaning towards the mITX build (second link), despite the Skylake build being my original plan. I think I could handle the Dynatron cooler, and I keep telling myself I can live with platters... Any other thoughts? I'm open to other critique, suggestions, etc.
