We went shopping for mattresses a while back, but they all felt the same.
I cannot justify spending $3000 on a mattress when a $1000 one feels almost the exact same.

Pillow top or not?
Firm or Soft?
Interspring or memory cell?

I feel like we should get a good one because we spend 1/3 of our time on it, but it's tough to make the call without sleeping on them for a while.

Any advice?

Pillow top is not a bad idea. :) We have a king size pillow top and it be comfortable. Although I can sleep on the ground and be happy but having a hurt back the next mornin'. :/

Keep a eye on the warranty also since decent ones will come with the kind of warranty that will make up for spending a bit more in the long run.

Mattresses in the U.S. are a total scam, I'd pick up a newish one from craigslist rather than dropping that crazy amount of money on a new. But then again I would never pay $1000 for something that costs $18 to make in china.

I'm amazed that the mattress business has been able to keep their margins and still have salespeople tell you all kinds of bullshit (you spend 1/3 your life on it) to justify paying their 500% margin.

Generally, the heavier you are, the more firm the mattress should be.

I just recently went mattress shopping. For the standard Sealy, Serta, etc., for me, there was a big jump in comfort from the 300$ mattress to the 600$ mattress. I went with an 800$ pillowtop one because it was even more comfy (independent coils). I A/B/C compared the mattresses for about an hour. Laid at least on the best 2 mattresses in my budget for 15 minutes each.

You can negotiate the price usually. You probably can knock off 15-20% off of the price, 5-10% if the mattress is already discounted (i.e. waive the tax), free delivery, free metal frame, etc.

They are far more willing to deal if you buy more than 1 mattress set (I went with my bro).

Interspring or memory cell is completely up to you. One isn't better than the other for your body, despite the marketing for memory cell. As a matter of fact, all three of your questions seem to be a matter of personal comfort.

If you have a platform bed, like I do, you don't need a boxspring mattress.

We will be getting a queen for now, because our room is small.
After we get a larger house, we can move it to a spare bedroom and get a king.

I slept in a hotel for the last week and I woke up feeling great every morning. (I should have checked the brand/model)
On our home mattress, I wake up every morning with a stiff back and neck.
I think our current mattress is too hard. It is a Full Sealy Posturepedic Inverness Plush.

Keetsa Cloud.

One of my friends has this, and when I visited him I flopped down on his bed (because he doesn't have couches and we could only smoke in his room), and fell asleep in 30 seconds.

I woke up feeling AMAZING. Best sleep I've ever had. Trying to convince the boyfriend to buy a new mattress (because why would I want to share the same bed that he did with his ex...and he needs a Keesta dammit!)...so far it's not working

I would be willing to spend hella money on the Cloud.

You can usually get the mattress for around 40-50% off the "retail" price. Ive negotiated many mattress deals for friends and family simply by betting each company with a "you cant beat our price" guarantee each other.

Go to sleepys, find a mattress you like. Dont worry about price.
Call 1800sleepys, ask them for best price on mattress that you like.
Call 1800mattress, tell them sleepys offered you mattress X for 20% less than your quote. They will beat it by 10% or so
Call 1800sleepys, tell them 1800mattress offered you mattress X for the price they quoted.

Repeat until one says "thats near our cost we cant beat that"
