Update on post 59, Page 3.

$5 gift to your PayPal account or a pink evo3 iSkin for a 30gb ipod video (and anything else I find that fits in that box).

I have a queen size memory foam mattress that I need to take home with me. It's a six hour drive so tying it to the roof isn't an option. Well it is an option but I don't want to drive the whole way worrying about it. I want to get it to fit into my midsize SUV. The mattress came to me in a box, folded over a few times. So folding it seems like the best (if not only) option. But how exactly do I go about folding this and making sure it stays folded?

EDIT: Forget about keeping it folded...let's focus on how to fold it.

Put it in a box

Fold then tie it down like the way a Christmas gift box can be tied closed.

Good call...I didn't realize I saved the box. Alright so how do I get it into the box? Compressing it is harder than it should be.

Yeah they probably squeeze the crap out of it at the factory. You might need a bigger box. If you use twine instead as has been suggested, I would first wrap the folded mattress in one or more heavy blankets The mattress is obviously going to want to expand after it's folded; the twine will resist that expansion, but the parts that are not confined with twine will expand. The twine could cut into the mattress.

That's exactly what I'm worried about. The twine would just act as a blade at those pressures...

Do you have a hitch? If so rent a trailer. They are typically $20 at Uhual and (obviously) don't charge you mileage.

Rent a 10ft cargo van. A queen mattress will fit in one no problem as long as you load it on an angle.

I don't have a hitch (I wish I did if I knew trailers were that cheap to rent) and renting a van would be too much trouble if I need to tow my car behind it.

how about rolling it up like a cigar then wrap it/tie it up with masking tape. This is assuming that masking tape won't damage the foam when it's removed. If the masking tape is not strong enough, put packaging tape over it.

I was going to suggest to rent a van or large SUV but someone beat me to it!

what I do with my memory foam mattress (though it's a twin size), is fold it, sit on it for a few minutes, fold it, sit on it, fold it, sit on it, until it fits into a carton/box of a good size.

Not a very good memory foam mattress if it can't remember how to fit itself back into the box now is it? :p

I thought about that, but as you continue to roll it, it just gets thicker and thicker because it's hard to compress every part of it, while maintaining that compression as you roll. I'm not worried about tape damaging it because I could just put some kind of plastic wrap under it.

Seems like the most ideal/cheapest method yet. I'll have to call over a few a friends though. Or this one person I have in mind...

Shoot it out of a cannon. PM for PayPal address.

Link to purchasing mattress size cannon?

I'm surprised nobody has said it yet. You need to get some winch style tie downs that you can ratchet tighter. Just folding it and tying with twine won't work, but if you can get some lever action with one of those ratchet tie downs you can probably compress it to a decent point.

Hmm, maybe fold/roll it up so it's nice and tight, then get a decent sized cardboard box and cut the top and bottom (or just open top/bottom) and push the mattress pad through. Using tape may leave a residue on the mattress.

Wasn't that suggested in post #9?
