2 AM, time for bed talk!

I don't understand what mattress toppers are for. You buy a nice bed then the next thing you do is put something else on top of it to sleep on? Seems strange. Kinda like putting a cheap bed on top of a nice new foam mattress.

But, wondering if it might solve my heat problem. Got an older foam mattress, one of the ones from Costco (only about 5-6 years old i guess). It's fantastical for the price but the drawback would be the heat. Waking up sweating sucks. I think most newer foam mattresses have better ways of staying cool. Not going to buy a new mattress though. I wonder if I could get a mattress topper that would keep cool in hot temps?

Speaking of beds. I've never been able to find any sheets that fit my foam mattress. It's always a loose wrinkled mess up top and I have to constantly pull the sheets down to tighten. Is there anything that will make sheets stay tight and in place?

We got a memory foam bed a year ago and at first it was nice but over time we thought it was a bit too firm. Rather than return the bed (which we could've) we got a memory foam topper to make it a bit softer.

Worked out nice

ah damn I actually have some of those somewhere come to think of it...no idea where they might be.

How about for the heat issue, could a mattress topper help there?

While on the subject of sleep... not worth mentioning but I will anyways, I can't sleep on my back, it seems impossible. My body is comfortable as hell when laying on my back on my foam mattress, but I've never ever been able to sleep like that. Dammit! Doomed to be a side sleeper i guess.

We got a mattress topper to get a couple more years out of our old mattress.

Plus we used the opportunity to get a memory foam topper to see if it would be too hot for us to use in the Summer. Of course it wasn't apples to apples, but it did give us an idea.

I use these:

I'm sure the sheet suspenders work, too. I've been very happy with my sheetsnug clips though. Never tried the suspenders.

bump!

Anyone have any experience with lamb's wool toppers? Expensive as balls but supposed to be the best insulators...keeping you cool in the summer and warm in the winter. One here at amazon: Snugfleece and another for half the price (but apparently bundled with a funky odor): at Overstock: Queen Lambs Wool Mattress Pad

Also tried 'bed suspenders' and they didn't hold onto the sheets, so my sheets are still a big loose mess on top.

In other news I'm sleeping like 18 hours a day and feeling tired as hell when I'm awake, so I think I'm dying.

Get some egg crate foam to put on top for the heat. Foambymail is one place that sells all sizes.

I don't understand their purpose on a mattress, but I use a topper like a futon.

I tend to agree...buy a GOOD mattress to begin with...no extra topper needed...

On the contrary. Spending $1,000+ for a "good" bed that is just a regular bed with a $50 topper sewn on, is the stupid way to go. Go buy a $400 mattress and 5 different mattress toppers, you'll still come out ahead money wise and you'll have tried 5 different beds in your own house that you can sleep in and decide which is best for you.

I hate the mattress industry.

overstock.com has a good selection of mattress toppers. A lot of them are memory foam. I had a ~1.5" memory foam topper on my old bed and I like it. It was $40 from Marshalls or some such place. Money very well spent.

I'm suspicious of the cool in summer claim. I'd like to see an explanation why something that's designed to trap heat in airspace keeps you cool when it's you that's the heat source. Does it dissipate heat before it gets to the foam? If so, that would make you cooler in winter too.

Your problem is the foam mattress. It's hard to beat the traditional springs. Modern improvements seldom are.

At least use a mattress pad. Easier to wash a pad than the whole bed....

We buy pillow top foam matresses now. Firm with soft top! We got a adjustable bed for the master in our house and I still feel the cheaper foam mattress in our guest bedrooms with the pillow tops are more comfortable.

a lot of people put plastic mattress covers on their mattresses. that way if you spill food, ball a chick, or pee your bed, you dont ruin the mattress. but the plastic doesnt breathe obviously and it can make you very sweaty, hence a washable mattress cover.
