Hi all,
I'm looking to purchase a new mattress set. Does anyone have experiences/suggestions that they'd like to share? My price range is 1000-1300 or so.

I'm not really a big fan of the memory-foam stuff. I've tried it and it just feels weird compared to traditional mattresses.

Thanks in advance,
-Eric

For half that price you can get a very nice pillow top mattress set, try mattress discounters

I'm kind of wary of mattresses with these pillow-top/foam-top/whatever-top features. I've heard that the quality of the material (foam?) used is often indeterminate & can lead to your expensive mattress turning into a pos after a few months. As a result it seems like a safer bet to get a traditional, non-padded mattress & put on a 3rd party mattress pad/topper/cuddle bed/whatever you call it.

They offer regularly 40% discount code on their bed sets (check some good deals websites to find them).

I am sleeping like a rock since the blessed day I have received it.

I did it the old fashioned way.

I went to Sleepy's, told the sales lady how much I wanted to spend, tried out a bunch of mattresses, and then she approved me for 1 year no interest and up-sold me to something twice as expensive as I wanted to spend. lol.

lol, I went to Sleepy's today and they tried trick me. They pushed a kingsdown model & a miralux model, offering 1/2 off the sticker price for both. On the chance that the sales guy was being genuine, I put 10% down. I'd never heard of either of those brands... but get on the internet and BAM they both suck. Bad.

I'm going back tomorrow to get my money back and see if I can't talk down a Sealy mattress. That's what I have at home and since info on mattresses is so godamn scarce, looks like brand loyalty will save the day.

Well according to consumerreports, you should be able to get a reasonable queen-sized for $800. Also if you think you'll one day desire to sell the mattress, queen beds are a lot more popular/appealing than full. The extra space may also be appreciated by anyone sharing the bed.

Some potentially objective articles:
http://www.mattressbuyersguide...t8Sa6ZMCFQtvGgodcnzhWg
http://www.consumersearch.com/...ss-reviews/review.html
http://www.slate.com/id/93956/

They don't offer much advice on buying mattresses, but there are common themes across all 3 pieces indicating common pitfalls/scams/etc.

Also, I think you can go a long way toward protecting yourself by doing things like going on a store's website before you visit the store to see what brands are offered. See what's in your price range and then research all those brands on the internet. If I'd done this, I would've quickly realized that there's a lot of negativity toward Miralux and Kingsdown. (And really, a lot of negativity toward Sleepy's in general.)

Good luck, mattress buying is ass.

Edit: I should add 2 more things...
1) According to one angry post on epinions, Sleepy's salespeople get double commissions on Kingsdown & Mralux mattresses. Additionally the latter is an off-brand (and some models of the former are similarly lame), so the sales people won't break a sweat taking 1/2 off the price. DON'T BE DECEIVED! If price negotiations are going trivially, keep your guard up. Anyway, point is that the salespeople will try to push these two brands.
2) Don't believe all the positive posts you see online. Mattress makers are known to enter fake, positive user-reviews.

I bought a decent pillowtop about a year and a half ago and it's starting to sag in the middle. I have to rotate it frequently now, otherwise I toss and turn.

I'm with you, I'd rather get a firmer mattress and then just get a 3rd party topper if I wanted a little more cushion.

Go to a mattress place, lay on them. Then shop around for the ones you like. (unless that place has a killer deal)

<-- got a Cal King bed+mattress set for $1100 delivered (yay sales!) and has been happy with it.

I second this. I've had mine for a year and really like it.

I went to Sleepy's originally but the sales guy was a pushy sleezeball and tried every damn trick in the book to get me to put a deposit down on a mattress. He was willing to cut me all kinds of "deals" because the manager was out of town, but I'd have to commit on the spot and crap like that.

I am with you friend. My new apartment for Grad School isn't furnished and I am clueless. I am also moving to a really small college town where I am willing to bet anything that the locals will try to take me to the cleaners.

I have $600-700 and would love to get a Queen. I like it fairly firm and my GF has a down mattress top.

Any suggestions?
