BBC bosses are going to attempt to regenerate ALL the former Time Lords, reuniting them in a Doctor Who special.

Seven of the surviving actors are set to return in cameo roles on the 3D episode to mark the 50th anniversary of the sci-fi favourite.

And chiefs also want to involve the first three Doctors – William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton and Jon Pertwee – who have died since the first episode screened back in 1963.

They would be included in the feature-length special using computer generated images and old footage.

Doctors of old Tom Baker, 79, Peter Davison, 61, Colin Baker, 69, Sylvester McCoy, 69, Paul McGann, 53, Christopher Eccleston, 48, and David Tennant. 41, are thought to have agreed to take part alongside current star Matt Smith, 30.

This week writer and producer Steven Moffat – who is notoriously secretive – admitted: “Getting the other Doctors involved would be very fitting for the anniversary episode, wouldn’t it?”

He is still writing the special, which is due to be filmed this spring.

The plot is a fiercely-guarded secret, but Moffat said the fact the original show was delayed by more than a minute by an extended news bulletin would be referenced.

The first episode with Hartnell as The Doctor was broadcast on November 23 – the day after President Kennedy was shot.

The special episode is likely to provide the exit point for Smith, who is expected to regenerate into the 12th Time Lord.

The next season could be about getting Doctor Who some more lives. Perhaps a one off season for the 12th doctor? Simon Pegg comes to mind.

i hope they dont give the Dr more lives in the same way(s) they gave the Master

The only Doctor Who episode I've ever watched completely was with Tom Baker...sometime in the 1970's.
I wasn't crazy about the show and never watched it again, I've tried to watch it in its current regeneration...and just can't get into it.

Because you're watching the wrong Doctor. David Tennant (10th Doctor) > all Doctors.

Yup, David Tennant was the best doctor. Matt Smith isn't bad, but David Tennant raised the bar pretty high.

I really did like the season of Eccleston. I thought David Tennant was very good by the end, but it took a bit for me to warm up to him. I'm about a dozen episodes into Matt Smith's run and he hasn't won me over completely yet. Of course, in general I prefer the "monster of the week" episodes over the multi episode story arcs and they seem to be doing a lot more of those multi-part episodes now

Historically speaking, Tom Baker was head and shoulders above Tennant. But that's from the point of view of someone who actually was able to watch the show and actors/characters during the eras they were written for. If you're going to to back and re-watch Baker's Doctor now and try to compare it to Tennant's Doctor, the writing is completely different and the acting style is completely different because we're looking at almost 40 years of "evolution" in entertainment history. Most people aren't fond of "the swingin' 70's" style anymore.

Christopher Eccleston is definitely my favorite, although I'm not past the Tennant episodes yet. I wish he had been in more episodes!

Fantastic! :awe:

wait, i'm confused....

I never watched the original series only the series that started back in 2005, and I haven't caught up with the latest episodes of that yet. So I don't quite know the full lore/background of Doctor Who.

So my question is, how can all the doctors be together at once? They're all the same person aren't they? I mean, when they regenerate, it's the same person just a different body, right?

Unless this is a time travel issue, where an older version of the doctor comes to the future with the current version? I'm pretty sure there was an episode where there was 2 of the same version of the doctor since he used time travel.

If this is the case, I wonder why they haven't done it before?

I was finally really warmed up to him as the Doctor and was looking forward to him sticking around for a while. I realize the doctor regenerating is part of the lore of the show, but the turnover for that position seems ridiculously fast. There is always a bit of transition time to get into the new actor - then when you are finally comfortable with it - bam, time for a new doctor. So personally I'm hoping the rumor is false and he sticks around for a while.

Hmm, conflicted. Eager to see all those doctors in an awesome anniversary episode. But also eager to see Matt Smith depart. Do we get both? Or is it a 1 or the other thing?

If Smith is leaving then that would seem to indicate the anniversary episode will be the last one of the upcoming spring series.

I dont remember how they did it, but even on the old series they had one called The Five Doctors that put all the old doctors in the same episode, was pretty cool at the time, and I'm looking forward to this incarnation. Remember he's a time traveller, so I would guess it would be possible to run into past incarnations if they were in the same timeline.

What they HAVEn't done is have a future doctor..and if you ask me, this would be the opportune time to introduce the next incarnation, even if that person didn't take over for another season or more...would be kinda cool foreshadowing.

There is some reason different Doctors are not supposed to meet but in The Five Doctors we found out they can if the situation is serious enough to warrant it.
