They should hire Michael Jordan. Hell, he might even do it for free or give up his salary to the school.

o well, and they are suppose to compete for the ACC title next year. Dont see it happening unless they can get a decent coach in soon. They need to bring back Dean.

Can you imagine the recruits he would be able to get? The only problem I can see about that would be Jordan expecting too much, expecting everyone to live up to what he was like.

As much as I despise UNC, I must admit that Doherty is not the coach they need to get to the next level. UNC had a great crop of frosh this year. Some of Doherty's strategies and plays were questionable, IMO. Additionally, there had been rumors going around this past season about a lot of friction between Doherty and his players.

Or sucking. Doh was the worst thing to happen to UNC in 15 years.

Ooh,

If MJ coached UNC, he'd roast his players worse then Matt Doherty ever did. There was an article on Kwame Brown's development his rookie year and in essence, the poor kid face broke out under the constant tongue lashings and disappointment directed his way. The same temparament that made Jordan the fiery competitor wouldn't be as productive in a teaching capacity.

*sniff* D'oh was my favorite Carolina coach of all time. What he did to the basketball team what I'd only dreamed others would do. :(

Oh lord. That's all we need is another trying-to-look-like-a-goodie-two-shoes Bob Knight. Who in the hell gives back a year salary of a quarter million?

In all my years of following basketball I've never heard Jordan say such a comment as "he should be as good as me." Jordan's been called the best of all time, and he's such a man of class (despite the adultery charges) that I dont' think he'd ever expect such a thing. I mean, he is on the wizards... NC probably has a better team then them :)

What, run it in the crapper? :D

He has not proved his coaching ability in the past couple of years. He's had some great players, too, but just wasn't a good coach. He could've taken them places, but didn't. This announcement may give us a little insight as to why he's sucked ass the past couple of years.

But who cares. Go Kentucky Wildcats!!! (don't say a word tarheels, atleast we MADE the NCAA tourney :p)

Actually, this was Doh's 3rd season, and it was a remarkable improvement over last season, when he had ZERO talent. His first season was very successful and he was coach of the year nationally.
He has absolutely proved his coaching ability, and has also proved his recruiting ability. You don't pay attention if you think he had any talent last year. Name a decent player from last year's team. Dean Smith couldn't have gotten last year's team to the NIT, much less the NCAA's, then again, you could make a HUGE case for Dean squandering talent......he got more good players than any coach in the history of the game, yet only had 2 titles.
Doh's current crop of freshmen was ranked second only to Duke's, (and they performed much better than Duke's) and he has plenty coming in next year. Whoever steps in will be successful because Doh left the Heels stocked.
He had a couple of bad years because his predecessor, Gutheridge, recruited NOBODY besides Joe Forte, who went pro early.
I am an NC State fan, and it is too bad that my school keeps Herb Sendek for 7 years with mediocre results, while UNC fires Doherty after only 2 years out of the NCAA's, and he was going back to the big dance next season. It took Herb 5 years to go, even with teams that had plenty of talent.
Maybe our AD will follow suit.

No, he's making the league minimum for veterans and donating it.

Er, so I guess Jordan was stroking his team's ego when he has been giving them tongue lashings about their desire, etc. in the media? Read Jordan's book, he rode his teammates all the time even in Chicago. A professional player could handle it (although MANY broke), however, I have my misgivings about a green 18 year old. These kids come in thinking they're the best thing to happen to basketball (i.e. read Villanueve's comments)...cannon fodder for the king.

Anyhow, this is a moot point as Mike's not going anywhere but to the front office.

It's pretty easy when you are collecting another 750K in "other" income.

MJ in Chapel Hill courtesy of Duke nerds (click on the link)

Matt Doherty was not ready to coach UNC. He may become a great coach in 5 years but UNC lacks an on the job training program. He alienated the Carolina family by not retaining any assistants . . . particularly Phil Ford. His attempt to motivate led to the mass defection of Joe Forte (questionable integrity anyway), Julius Peppers, and Ronald Curry. What other coach would be so pompous to tell 7'5 Neil Fingleton to hit the bricks? Doherty thought he was guaranteed a great post player or two but laid an emu egg two consecutive years.

I think he's a decent guy . . . hopefully he will spend his severance on some anger management courses and some glasses . . . you would have to blind not to have seen this coming.

I liked Matt Doherty's intensity IMO. I thought he was over the top, but it was cool to see a coach flirt with emotions like he did, and get in Chris Collin's face.

I'm a lifelong NCSU fan. And at that, I hate Carolina. I could give a flip if Jesus coached them next year, I'd still wish them to miss every shot. It's good to see Carolina sucking.

Cool link btw. It'd be cool to have MJ back in the saddle around here, but could you IMAGINE what sort of tarnish it would be if he failed?....or was a sh!tty coach, as his wheelings and dealings in Washington have pretty much proven he can play the game, but he can't direct it.

PS.
First game I'd go to would be to sit by the UNC Bench and tell Jordan his dealership "Jordan NIssan" are a bunch of damn crooks. We got ramrodded when we bought our last car there. In the immortal words of Chuck to Wilson "Never Again......Never again"
