Matshita or Optiarc in imac?

I had purchased a new iMac when they refreshed a couple months ago only to run into some problems with the hardware. Apple replaced the iMac with a new one and I see that the superdrives are now different.

The older imac has a Matshita drive while this one has an Optiarc. Is there any difference between the two and if so what?

In all honesty, I have no idea, though if you were to elaborate upon what went wrong with the first iMac, maybe some help could be given.
 
the drives are the same specs, just different manufactures. like for hard drives there is seagate, hitachi, western digital etc

Nothing had to do with the superdrive....I had just noticed that the drives in the new and old imacs were different and was wondering if one was better then the other. I just found it odd that I ordered the same exact machine yet the drive was different.


 
Well, it makes a certain degree of sense that they would go with multiple vendors where they could. The 100GB drive in my MacBook is a Hitachi, the 120GB drive in Tyranicus' MacBook Pro is a Seagate.

Understood but those are technically different drives. These combo drives are the same.
 
If I had lied and told you that he had a 100GB drive would you have said anything?

They are the same in the sense that they have the same capabilities and are both compatible with OS X. However, my LG external burner is the same (with regards to capabilities) as the LiteOn burner in Tyranicus' Hackintosh, and yet they are different manufacturers.

My Mac shipped with 2*256MB Hynix RAM, my buddy's MacBook with 2*256 of Samsung, there, now are you happy with the comparison and the point that a manufacturer is idiotic unless they get multiple vendors?

How else do you think it is that Intel and AMD really go too majorly at odds (that I have heard of) with each other? IBM required Intel to give their designs to AMD or they wouldn't do business with either of them. IBM required having at least 2 sources of parts for all their computers.

You got a different brand of drive, you will notice next to no difference, and if it should fail, you might get a different brand as the replacement. OS X being the closed environment that it is, you can be sure that this new drive will work just as well as the old one.
 
I just recently stepped up to a Mac Pro from a 20" iMac (white). The iMac had a MaSHITa in it and that is just what it was. SHIT. I hated it.
