OK, posted this in GH too, but thought I might get some people here who may not see it amongst all the GH posts.
OK, first the set-up. IBM ThinkPad A21p (model 2629-HWU) Win 2K SP2, P-III 850 (Mobile), Adaptec EZ-CD 4.05, 256 MB RAM, and a Matshita UJDA310 (4x4x20) Ultrabay 2000 CD-RW drive. Just recently, the drive has developed the habit of quitting while about half-way through a burn. At first I suspected Adaptec, but the software had been working previously without flaw. I tried updating drivers, but I already had the newest according to IBM's update site. As a last ditch effort, I ran the system restore CD and did a clean install, and applying all driver updates and all updates from WindowsUpdate and from Adaptec. Burned two CD's just fine (one music, and one data, the data was one large file from a multimedia course I had taken). Third CD and the problem was back. The third CD was a data back-up of many small files, and the burn stopped about one quarter of the way through. I decided to go through the system error logs finding this error six times "The device, \Device\Ide\IdePort0, did not respond within the timeout period. ", and this error once "The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Ide\IdePort0. " This string of seven errors occured at the time the drive quit writing and they lead me to believe that the fault was not with the software, but with the drive, because whatever device is in the Ultrabay (in this case the CD-RW drive) is assigned as IDE 0. Am I off base here, or should I call IBM (again) and get an RMA for the drive? Thanks for any input.
