MatrixOrbital VFD Installation

Ok... just intalled a Matrix Orbital VFD (Vaccuum Flourecant Display (sp?)) on my box yesterday... the screen is very nice and all but its a bit finicky... i'm not sure if its software problems or just a picky peice of hardware. Anyway, I installed LCD Driver 1.2 and it started displaying all sorts of crud on the screen... just a bunch of junk. Also a friend of mine (who also installed the VFD) kept loosing his video signal after installing the driver. Anyway, the only software I could get to work on it was Smartie... it works pretty well, it displays system info, winamp stuff, and a bunch of other things... however Smartie isn't exactly the nicest software in the world.

Anyway, was wondering if anyone had any experience w/ VFD/LCD screens and the software that runs them.

For those who dont know what these are for: its a screen that fits in 2 drivebays and can display just about anything... kind of reminds me of the screen on a car radio.

Thanks for any help...

vetteguy - you can see all of matrixorbital's products (and places they can be purchased) here.

ragiepew - I have a crystalfontz lcd.. I was gonna get a matrixorbital but these were a bit cheaper.. and in order to get it to work properly, I had to set the jumper on the back of the lcd to the proper data rate.. also, you have to make sure LCDriver is set to the same data rate..

That was the only problem I had with mine..it works perfectly now

Thanks...great site! Did I actually see an LCD displaying Quake/UT type information?! Can that be done???

derusto: Yea that was the problem.. wrong data rate 😉... stupid me. Anyway, now it works! Thanks. It came to me preassembled so I had to take it apart... had to paint the shell silver to match my coolermaster case... so I was a bit affraid that I screwed something up. Anyway, all's good now!

vetteguy: Yea you can (supposedly) set it up to display that as well as many other things...

yeah, pretty much any data that you can program it to retrieve can be displayed there..the main problem is that if you want it, you usually have to do it yourself😉

Of course, there are still a lot of programs already out there for a lot of different things.. LCDriver is a really promising project because it aims to basically make an API set for the lcd panel.. kinda like D3D and OGL do for video games..
