Yeah, dude, it would certainly be one thing if you took source images from the Matrix site, and manipulated them in a way which is both original and makes it difficult to recognize where they came from.
#2 sorta meets that criteria, but could definitely use some work. If you create the code from scratch, the work will contain more of your own material than theirs, which makes posting it for download (albeit free) perfectly legal. #1 is just a inverse filter effect run on the original 1600 res wallpaper, and can be called blatant copyright infringement.
#1 is not just an inverse filter from the 1600 wallpaper, i used the image from the poster

try and replicate number one, it's not that easy because for the text i had to create an alpha channel (from scratch) and apply it to that text.
if i just ran an inverse filter the text would be pink
#2 was created from 2 posters, the code i used was partially created but i used a poster image as the source for the text
Ah, my bad. For some reason, I had mistaken #1 for an inverse of
this one, but obviously, that whole alpha channel negates the fact it was ripped almost straight from the source images.
Listen, if you want to qualify for fair use, it's gonna take more than an inverse and (my bad) and ALPHA CHANNEL to do so. You're going to have to create original segments of the image, and use MUCH more of your own stuff than the original work.
Take this for example. Yes, it uses photographs of Keanu and Hugo. But ignoring the code, both images have had segments added to them, and there was a LOT of airbrushing to clean up the myriad artifacts from working from the low-res images.
On top of that, the code was created entirely from scratch, and I created the lettering using curves, also from scratch. If I felt like it, I could finish off the rest of the alphabet and publish a Matrix font.
So EVEN if I turned off the actual image layers, there'd still be the lettering, the code, and a lot of airbrushing in the general shape of Keanu and Hugo.
I respect the fact you're trying - That's really the hardest part. I remember when I was just starting out. My advice to you is work with non-copyrighted material.
I got my start doing crap for CS-Art -
Some of my first pieces ever in photoshop can be found here. They're the ones by - you guessed it - Mach5. ;-)
I'm not saying what you're doing is crap, I'm just saying this:
1. Be careful with copyrighted material.
2. Start off working with non-copyrighted material, since that will give you MUCH more freedom to play around.
3. GET PERMISSION from the author of any material which is questionably copyrightable.
Hope this helps!
