If I have material 150' long, rolled up, roughly what might the diameter of the entire roll be if the material has the following thickness:

a) 1"
b) 1.25"
c) 1.5"
d) 1.75"
e) 2"

This is an artificial grass issue.

If it helps, if you want to do the calculation manually and understand it, it's more or less an area problem:

Find the cross sectional area (a rectangle, 150 feet long by 1.5 inches tall).

This is equal to the cross sectional area of the cylinder = pi r^2. If the cylinder is hollow, it's equal to pi R^2 minus pi r^2 where R is the outer radius and r is the inner radius.

Nice...so...

150'x1.5" = pi * r^2
1800"x1.5" = pi * r^2
2700" = pi * r^2
2700" = 3.14 * r^2
2700"/3.14 = r^2
860" = r^2
sqrt 860" = r
29" = r
58" = diameter

correct methodology? (the result looks consistent with the calculator above.)

Well your OD will depend on what your ID is. How tightly can this be rolled up?

Anyone's guess but I'd assume ID (hole in middle) would only be 1.5-2.5"ish. It's only 4' wide, pretty workable even with one person.

In fact, come to think of it, as the roll gets larger, the weight compacts the layer height more by compressing the grass, so that is probably a decent factor as well in anticipating the roll size.

What I've concluded so far is that I would likely need at least a 5' wide trailer instead of a 4' wide one, which is what I currently have.

That's a hell of a blunt you're working on. Can I come over? :awe:
