Matching XP CD Key to CD Version / Revision

Retro2001

Senior member
I'm in a situation where I've got an office with 6 old computers, each of which shipped with XP Home and had Windows XP Pro installed on them at some point by a previous consultant. I *believe* that it was a clean install from a retail CD, but I have no way to confirm that.
One of these computers needs a substantial rebuild that will require a reinstall of Windows. I've recovered the CD Key from the computer in question, but I've both a (very old) Retail boxed CD and a recent (SP2) OEM cd and neither installer will accept the key. Is there any way to either:
  1. Match my cd-key against some pattern list to determine what media I need.[/li]
  2. Find some history on one of the computers that would detail the media used to install (and therefore need to reinstall).[/li]

Also, these computers pass WGA, so I know that the keys are legit and such.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Will
