Simplified question...

Which plugs go to which pins for connecting pc case front panel to motherboard audio?

Plugs(Sockets):
S1 - MIC
S2 - MIC_BIAS
S3 - AUD_GND ?

Pins:
P1 - MIC_In
P2 - +5V
P3 - GND

Does this sound to you like:
S1 to P1
S2 to P2
S3 to P3
???

I have to remove some PCI cards to do this so I'm asking first.

I tried this but it doesn't work; but plugging directly into back of case works so config is good.

Either the mobo pins or the front panel wires might be mislabeled. If you have a DVM, you can check for ground and +5V. I'm not sure which contacts on the mic plug serve which function though the tip should be the mic output and the ring (biggest portion of the shank) should be ground therefore the small ring part should be bias - just going by convention and logic.
Just an observation...
