What I mean by 'masterpiece' is just something that you completely loved from start to finish. I have a hard time putting my favorite titles in any kind of order, but rather have a bunch that I just consider to be the most fun that I've had as a gamer.

No particular order, no limit on number of titles, just the one or ones that you loved more than all the others.

I'll start with mine for the 8-bit era :

Choplifter
Karateka
Prince of Persia
Super Mario Bros
Super Mario Bros 3
Tetris
Blaster Master
Castlevania
Castlevania 3
Final Fantasy
Mega Man 2
Batman (Sunsoft)
Contra

And 16-bit era

Super Mario World
Actraiser
Final Fantasy II and III
Chrono Trigger
MUSHA
Herzog Zwei
Military Madness
Castlevania Bloodlines
Castlevania Rondo of Blood
Castlevania IV
F-Zero
Phantasy Star II
Thunder Force III
Lightning Force
Super Metroid
Legend of the Mystical Ninja

Woot

Ill add a few random ones off the top of my head.

Xenogears
Xenosaga
Ni no Kuni
The Last of Us
Zelda Link to the Past
Zelda Ocarina of Time
Secret of Mana
Lunar The Silver Star
Lunar 2 Eternal Blue
Radiant Historia
Conkers Bad Fur Day
Banjo Kazooie

Could go on and on...

Xenogears stands on its own as the most incredible story ever told in a game. The scope and breadth is just beyond words. I felt very small in the universe as the credits rolled.
