mastering quake 3 ?

can anyone tell me how to be an expert quake III player? i'm a novice player of q3 and i can win against any of the bots only if i'm playing in the 'bring it on' mode or lower. Please help me out. i wanna be a master at it.

Yeah, bots are basically worthless no matter what game you play. Even if you get to the point where not bots are difficult anymore you will probably still get destroyed online.

False. I log hundreds of gaming hours against the bots on nightmare difficulty and when I go to LAN parties I absolutely own.

practice makes perfect. i agree. learn to recognize the weapon of the person you are facing and to move accordingly. there is nothing wrong with hiding behind a pillar when the entire screen is being covered with guns that spray fire. rockets...stay away from walls. railgun...aim better and faster than him. =)

Practice is most important here.
Also make sure you are not:
1. playing only with keyboard (I hope not )
2. using weapon auto-switch and have no near keys to switch weapons directly (or not using this at all)
3. ignoring strafing
3. never jumping or jumping always (you shouldn't jump if you face enemy with railgun, it's very easy to hit target if you know where it will land)

Practice with nightmare bots is very usefull, thought there is one problem about them: they are easy to predict and people are not.
Oh, and if you haven't played online yet:
I thought nightmare bots have a lot higher accuracy than people do, after several online games I don't think so

As the previous posters stated, you just have to PLAY. There is really nothing significant you can do (other than playing many hours), to get better. What you should be doing is playing against the bots that are just barely beatable for you. Don't stick with bots you can kill, start fighting against bots you cannot kill.

A number of us here have been playing these games since the original Quake. The only way we got better was playing against people. However, its really tough to play against people who are kicking your ass heavily, since you aren't really going to get a chance to learn at all. Playing against the Quake3 bots can be quite challenging and enough to start honing your skills against humans.

The Q3 bots SUCK!! At higher levels, they basically cheat, so it's an exercise in frustration. The UT bots are awesome! They can play CTF without making you want to shoot them. I was once in a online game where bots were added to keep sides even, and I didn't even notice that more bots than people were on until I actually read the names on the teams.

Helpful hints:

1. Use the WASD key config. Using the arrow keys means you still think you're playing Doom or Tomb Raider. You have a lot of keys available around your home position that allow lots of binds that can be tripped off without moving off the directional keys.

2. DO use weapons auto-switch, but make sure you know the order of weapons (machine gun, shotgun....BFG10K) and it helps to have the Q & E keys bound to prevweap and nextweap, respectively. When you run over a weapon pickup, you'll be able to cancel the switch instantly. When I run over a gun, you HEAR the pickup and switch sounds, but the first gun stays up.

3. Use a 5-button mouse and bind as much stuff as possible. Intellipoint 4.0 allows you to map buttons to keys for just game. I have my right button bound to zoom, and the large thumb button set to Use Item. (Handy when you fall off a platform with the Teleporter or need to use the Med Kit.)

4. Learn the patterns of the weapons. You need to know how far you need to lead your target with the rocket launcher, what it's damage radius is. The spread of the shotgun, etc.

5. If you're gonna play online, get broadband or prepared to be owned...BAD! Cable or DSL is fine, but satellite ISPs are lethal. Dial-up is better.

Don't even think of stepping online until you can consistently beat every map on hardcore or nightmare.

Ignore this! Go online and get your ass kicked by HUMANS, you'll learn a lot faster than memorizing Klesk and Crash patterns. People are random and unfamiliar, the bots are always the same, with only the level of cheating they do being the variable.

I can't agree here, I only got better playing online against humans. Instagib is a good way to practice your accuracy. You're going to get owned, I'm pretty much accepting the fact that I am, but it's still fun for me. I don't mind charging headlong into battle only to get fragged quickly, that's what respawn is for (and why I don't really like CS)

I gotta agree with this. I sucked hardcore until I started instagibbing [playing on servers with Railgun only] on a regular basis. I place confortably in the top third of most matches these days, and I almost never play against bots.

make sure you are getting decent fps as well....high resolutions usually equal less than great frame rates...


if you are going to play against the bots, work on your rail skills more than anything...
