Masterboot Problem?

New idea.
I had a bad stick of ram before.
Now, whenever I boot I get windows errors or my pc freezes right as it begins to read the hard drive.
To fix it I boot from my winXP cd rom, and I use the repair command to repair the masterboot record. Whenever I do this it tells me that I have a non-standard or invalid masterboot record. I continue, restart, and the pc boots up. However everytime I start up my computer I have to do this. Does anyone know what I can do to fix this problem permeantly?

Just taking a guess here, but when you get WinXP up... again.... create a bootable floppy with format abilities and try 'Format/mbr' you might have to go through the process of repairing it again like before.

Edit: I take that back.... fdisk/mbr I would consider that risk move and not 100% sure myself on what will happen. Maybe do a back of your OS drive before doing this.... free bump for anyone with a 100% answer.

yeah the fdisk /mbr command could very well fix you problem. Have you considered the fact that you might have a boot sector virus? Also is your system overclocked. An overclocked PCI bus can cause problems with the hard drive.

Well, fdisk/ mbr won't fix anything in Windows XP, as it's not a command in that OS.

Are you doing a fixboot or fixmbr? Try doing both.

If that doesn't work, there maybe a hardware issue. Try running a chkdsk /f. If that doesn't work, download your harddrive manufacturer's utilities for testing the drive and making sure it's alright.
