Did I miss something over the years?

What is the proper position of a master and slave HD on the primary IDE bus not in cable select mode?

For years I?ve been placing the master at the end of the cable ? slave in the middle.

I?m building another new system (P4 3.2, 1GB DDR 3500, New Maxter DiamondMax 9 and old IBM 120 GPX, 9800XT, DVD burner ? etc). The Plextor PX708A DVD burners manual shows the master HD placed in the middle of the cable nearest the mobo and the slave on the end in all of it?s diagrams except for cable select.

Same with the DVD burner ? as master ? it?s also in the middle and the slave CDROM on the end?

I should place both masters on the primary and secondary in the middle?

I want the faster transfer rate I can get but I also want it done right.

It only matters with 80 connector cables

For speeds up to UDMA/33 - everything that uses a 40 wire cable - it doesn't matter in what order the drives are plugged into the connectors on the IDE cable. Either drive can use the middle or the end connector (the connector on the other end of the cable's for the motherboard socket). Use whatever's physically convenient.
