I used the Western Digital Lifeguard data tools to run diagnostic tests on my two HDdrives.

First Drive- WD74GB Raptor> Quick test-passed, Extended test-passed.

Second Drive-WD500GB Blue Caviar Sata II . On this test for Drive #2 test, I ran the WDQuick test then a window popped up right away and stated, ERRORS, STOPPED, after about a minute. How do I re-start this Quick text for this particular drive? It always tells me it has stopped.

After finding bad sectors in drive#2, I ran the repair utility, and it still seemed sluggish, so I reformatted the 74GB which I use for the First Boot where all the applications are...re-installed windows ,apps, hardware and software,it seemed to be ok for a few days, then once I turned it on today, I get this "MASTER HARD DISK ERROR..PRESS F1 TO RESUME"" what???? is this the hard drive #2, since Drive number #1 passed both tests? If the first drive passed, and is the first boot drive to windows, could the second drive be a problem too, even though it's not the boot to windows drive and only used for storage?

I tried for about forty minutes to boot to the windows screen, but each time I'd get this "MASTER HARD DISK ERROR..PRESS F1 TO RESUME"" error message. Does this error message that includes the "F-1" still mean that I could have a problem with the hard drive, (it showed bad sectors before I reformatted it) or is it a windows or bios problem? Thanks!

The first drive checks out so i doubt that is the source of the problem. There is almost no way the second drive could cause this sort of problem to the first. One of the things that could corrupt a file or cause a bad sector would be bad RAM. Run Memtest and see how the RAM checks out.

I Stopped the Extended test on Drive 2 after elapsed time of 04:18:54,
The Estimated time showed 27:47:51

The extended test according to Western Digital should only be 30 minutes to an hour, but the ESTIMATED time showed 27 hours!!! I removed the 500GB Storage Second Drive, rebooted, and it started right up like nobody's bizness. The Error message says "MASTER HARD ERROR"...I thought the boot drive with Windows on it IS the Master, because it first boots to that. So I guess it might be this 500GB after all.

"The Error message says "MASTER HARD DISK ERROR"...I thought the boot drive with Windows on it IS the Master, because it first boots to that. So I guess it might be this 500GB after all."

I'm sorry for the confusion, I should not have included the "The Error message says "MASTER HARD DISK ERROR".

What I meant to say was the error message, WITH the Drive#2 500GB Storage HHD still onboard, then when I removed this 500HDD,and booted up only with the Raptor 74Gb with all the OS and apps..it rapidly, it booted up normally (and possibly faster) to windows.

But the message said MASTER HARD DISK,and I thought the first boot HHD (raptor) was the master, not the drive 2.

Thanks! have great day!

As far as I know, "Master" does not refer to the first boot HD, but rather, Master/Slave settings. Which, for SATA, every drive is a "Master", since SATA has no Master/Slave jumpers.

Learning everyday.Thank you Larry.
I guess I'll be sending this 500GB back to RMA at Western Digital..Only two years old.
