Why do I keep reading that people don't recommend that you use your server/NAS as the Master Browser on a Home Network? Highest uptime with most resources available would seem to make it a reasonable choice. Is there a practical reason that I wouldn't want this.
Here's the backstory.
I just set up a Raspberry Pi (OpenELEC/XBMC) that was going all Vladmir Putin on my network. The moment it logged on to the network, it would assume all duties as the Master Browser. When it did this, the individual computers stopped showing up in Explorer at any locations on the network (Win7 and WHS2011 OS). Actual services and sharing weren't hindered and I could still access all locations directly, just didn't have the computers showing up individually.
I eventually shut SAMBA off in the RaspPI and tweaked the registry in WHS2011 box to make it the default Master Browser and to keep the Domain List. It works well when I just have the printer and the other Windows PCs on it, but now when I let my WDTV Live Hub onto the network, it wrenches the duties from the Server. Not really a problem, but it does seem to make the icons appear more slowly than when one of the Windows PCs is the Master Browser.
If anyone knows how to shut the service off in a WDTV Live Hub without disabling Samba, I'd be all ears.
