Went to see Matchstick Men this weekend and saw the preview for this movie. I really want to see it as it's based on a book from a series I've been reading that is great. The books were written by Patrick O'brian and I've read nearly all of them now. They're about a captain in the Royal Navy and chronicles his career as a captain. It's kind of fact interspersed with fiction. They fight in many of the major sea battles between the French and the English, and many of the mentions of this ship blowing up and that one sinking are true, but there never was a Captain Jack Aubrey, so it's hard to tell where fiction begins and fact ends because of how well versed the author was. It's definitely gonna be a cool movie, but I don't know if Russell Crowe is going to be a convincing British sea captain, lol.
One thing did kind of tick me off is that they make no mention of Patrick O'brian anywhere in the trailer or on their site. He wrote the whole book the movie is based on and from what I can tell it's not like the producer took some of his ideas and character names and then changed it entirely either. I think they should make some reference to the true artist behind the story. Check out the web page for a little info, but there's not much there yet.

Hollywood rips off people all the time. You're surprised by this?

BTW, the trailer didn't look good at all. My rule of thumb is that a movie stinks if they can't make the trailer lokk good.

Well I'm gonna go see it, sorry you didn't like it so much. I have a feeling it's not going to do to well, because people are not as interested in the tall ships anymore. They'd rather go watch movies about souped up imported cars. The art of fighting a sea battle in ships only propelled by the wind is lost on them. Read one of Patrick O'Brian's books and you might change your mind. At the very least you'll learn something about how wars were fought back then.

Saw a trailer for Troy before Matrix Revolutions and it has potential. Just hope it doesn't turn into something like Gladiator (CGI-laden and weak plot.)

Reviews sound good.

Also, I've heard the authors name about a 100 times this week in reviews and stories about the movies. I'm also sure he will be credited with the original story in the movie credits. He's getting his time in the spotlight. Everyone has been raving about his books this week as well. They say the books are fantastic. Hope you enjoy the flick. Just doesn't look all that interesting to me.

CNN Review: Crowe Film is 'Master' - ful

Bah...Gladiator sucked!

Too much CGI and the plot was HORRIBLE!!

Russell Crowe getting the Best Actor Oscar for that was a makeup call for him not getting it for The Insider

Looks good, but I hear it's too loosely based on reality for me to consider it anything more than just a fantastical fictional story. So I'll see it knowing that.

uhhh...from the review:

The film, set during the Napoleonic Wars and based on a series of novels by Patrick O'Brian, is beautifully crafted by director Peter Weir and superbly acted by Russell Crowe, Paul Bettany and an exceptional supporting cast. It's also so true to life -- something vitally important to O'Brian's fans -- you can almost taste the sea spray splashing on to the deck.

Indeed, "Master and Commander" has an almost obsessive determination for historical accuracy. Every detail, from the the ropes used on the masts to the silverware used by the ship's officers, appears authentic.

Almost all of the action takes place at sea (actually in the same water tank in Baja California used for "Titanic"), and you can really feel the claustrophobic atmosphere on the small British ship, the HMS Surprise.

Doesn't sound fictional ;)

Those submarines in u-571 seemed very authentic as well. So we all know that as long as it looks authentic, the story is historically accurate.

Master and Commander

I had to wait through the entire credits to see them credit Starship Troopers with Robert A. Heinlien...

If you want historical accuracy, get an encyclopedia. Movies are for entertainment.

Of course its fiction, but Patrick O'Brian tells a great story. Now what movie can I see that ISN'T mostly fiction! Non fiction movies are called Documentaries. Not sure what you consider fantastical, I doubt you will see and ships crewed by ghosts, or any mythical monsters. What I expect is a somewhat accurate representation of life aboard a 19th century British Navy ship.

Perhaps some of the current fasination with pirates will bleed over to this move. I wish it luck.

I watched this movie today, too. It was easily one of the best movies that I've seen this year. A very well made and good movie! 10/10.

I saw Master & Commander yesterday and I thought it was a pretty good movie. Better than most of the crap that's been released this year. I didn't really want to see it after I saw the trailer but it was worth seeing.

I liked this movie, too. Probably one of the best I've seen this year. Very entertaining... It's not action-packed like the previews might have led you to think.
