According to unconfirmed reports, the meteorite was intercepted by an air defense unit at the Urzhumka settlement near Chelyabinsk. A missile salvo reportedly blew the meteorite to pieces at an altitude of 20 kilometers.

My money's on this as well. People probably saw the meteorite explode and thought it was blown up by a missile. Meteorites blow up because the temperature change from deep space to earth entry. If there's a lot of water in them, they basically sound like popcorn popping.Probably because it didn't happen? Other than that site, all the other stories I read indicated that the meteorite exploded on its on in the air, like the Tunguska blast in 1908.
