LOLWUT??? Am I just old fashioned, or does this seem absolutely ridiculous to anyone else?

A new policy in a Massachusetts public school district that makes condoms available to all students, even elementary school-aged students, is drawing criticism from some who say the plan goes too far.

Provincetown School Board Chairman Peter Grosso says because there is no set age when sexual activity starts, the committee decided not to set an age for condom availability.

Under the policy, any student requesting a condom from a school nurse must first receive counseling, which includes information on abstinence. The policy does not require the school to contact parents.

The policy was approved by Provincetown's school committee June 10. It takes effect in the fall.

Kris Mineau, president of the conservative Massachusetts Family Institute, called the idea absurd.

But Goss defended the plan.

"It's about availability; we're not handing 'em out like M&M's," he told the Boston Globe.

But parent Jeanmarie Kaeselau, 41, who has a fifth- and an eighth-grader in the school system, told the Globe she wasn't comfortable with the plan.

"That's a little weird," she said. "I'd rather have him come to me."

Provincetown is located on the picturesque Massachusetts island of Cape Cod.

Wow, times have changed. When I was in high school, the kids didn't start shagging until 12th grade, and there weren't that many. We're talking only 8 years ago.

I'm thinking it's more overreaction to a non-issue. I doubt kids that age would even know where to stick their johnson, let alone put a condom on it.

"The policy does not require the school to contact parents."

Guess what? Having sex does not require you to tell your parents.
I guess some people just want to have more 12 year olds having babies.

People need to grow up and understand that kids will have sex. And they will do it whether they have condoms or not.

With condoms they have a chance of not spreading disease and not having kids.
Without condoms, well, babies and diseases.

Sexual counseling and condoms without parental consent? This isn't going to go very well.

maybe you should go to him (especially the 8th grader, if she hasn't by now she's not doing her parenting very well)

The school can't take my kid on a field trip down to the town library without me signing a permission slip, but they can pass out condoms? wtf?

I know you guys didn't get laid much back in school (hell, I know I didn't) but that doesn't mean nobody else did either. We can stick our fingers in our ears and pretend that kids in elementary school never enter into these situations, but reality says different.

I'm not saying I agree with this policy, just that with girls going through puberty earlier I can understand the idea behind it.

Yep, idiot parents like this are the reason schools have to come up with plans listed here. That and the standard bad parent answer of "but he/she is only XX years old...".

Yea when ever I had sex I always checked with my mom first to make sure it was ok. :hmm:

Deval...please fire that dude who made that decision. Oh wait, that's right. Deval is doing all he can to not get reelected (or so it seems).

Schools need to focus on academics and stop trying to fill the role of the parent. It isn't working.

I can almost see why they're doing it, to help prevent teen pregnancies and such, but I don't know. It's a little strange. Times sure have changed.

Here's a piece of info that seems escape most people. Kids won't suddenly decide to have sex because the school is giving away condoms.

this school includes middle school. kids in houston in 7th and 8th grade have been found having sex in the bathroom before. seems like a good idea to me

The language here is very important in riling people up. When they say distribute, you think someone is handing them out in the hallways in between classes. No.....They will be available like at the nurses office or something like that. Big deal.

We have enough babies being born to child(ish) mothers anyway. Condoms or birth control should be mandatory until you have proof of income and pass a parenting course.

Honestly, most people shouldn't have kids.

Okay, it's culture setting the tone of all this. giving out condoms won't magically stop or start kids having sex, but it's one small step in this change of culture we're seeing.

Of course your approach seems to just be hands off at all costs. I think whether you agree or disagree with 12 year olds having babies, not doing anything in any situation isn't going to make things better.

What control does the Governor have over the decision? None

And to everyone else, Provincetown is probably the most liberal and gay town in the state with a population of 3k and 200 kids in the entire school system.

You must have been hanging out with the dorky kids...

That makes a big difference, IMO. I was thinking that it was K-5th, which I feel is too young to give out condoms, but by 8th grade, it's not such a bad idea.

high school yea i have no problem with that, put them in a jar on each teachers desk for free as far as i care. elementary school is a bit much to try to understand why.

the rule says they dont have to tell the parents. tell you what mr administrator if my 7 year old son went to you to get a rubber you better god damn call me. that is just plain loony not to tell a parent. jesus christ i have to send a note to the school if he is out sick but they dont have to tell me the school gave him a fricken rubber? WTF!
