Mass Effect Space Sim?

While playing Mass Effect, I couldn't help noticing some of the similarities in atmosphere, sound and ship design. Heck, even the interfaces/menus looked sort of the same. Made me think a Mass Effect space sim could be great. Thoughts?

Goes without saying there hasn't been anything worth mentioning in this genre since X3, and really nothing good since Freespace2. I'm not really interested in a game akin to homeworld or Sins of a Solar Empire where you micro-manage and control capital ship (this has been done to death imo), but one where you pilot fighters.

Eh....the little space combat we saw in Mass Effect struck me as boring and more then a little unimaginative, especially given all the lore they had to work with. Eezo should allow for unbelievable maneuverability on ships, effective mass drivers, mass increasing weaponry - all sorts of stuff. But it had nothing but missiles - heck, only the bad guy even have an energy beam weapon.

Actually, I take that back. Plenty of non missile weapons at work. Though the ships should still be far more maneuverable.

It would desperately need a major reworking to be interesting, and after that....it's not really Mass Effect, is it?

all of the mass effect ships were almost complete copies of the warships from the space battle in serenity.

The last space sim I enjoyed was Independence War 2. I have been craving a good one for many years now but have yet to find it. Should I try this Mass Effect ?

Definitely, I'd give Mass Effect a try. Be warned however that if you don't like small budget, indie-developer games done on a shoe-string budget, Mass Effect is probably not for you. If you like an intreging story line about a nere-do-well, quirky band of space bucanneers, you'll love it. The critics weren't kidding when they called it "the little game that could." :D

All kidding aside, it's a great game.

I actually think the space battles were limited enough to leave a lot of room for interpretation. The advantage to using Mass Effect as a base is the universe, atmosphere and storyline are already there and would be good fodder for a space sim.

Mass Effect is not a space sim at all. It just has a story and universe that would potentially be suitable for one.

Exactly, sorry if I gave that impression.

Considering they had to rely on pre-rendered FMVs for the space battles, I'd want to see if they could get acceptable performance rendering real-time first. I thought Sovereign was pretty cool though; I don't think its likeness to a giant cockroach was an accident.
