So, I had an urge to play Mass Effect again (I rented it when it originally came out), seeing as how Mass Effect 2 is right around the corner, and I deleted my save games from the HDD a long time ago. Also, I had played it on a 27" SDTV, and I wanted to see what it looked like on a 42" LCD HDTV.

I purchased the Platinum Hits version for $20. It didn't mention anything about any added content in the description online, so I thought I would just get the game disc and nothing else. To my pleasant surprise, the Platinum Hits version of Mass Effect contains a bonus disc that has the Bring Down The Sky DLC on it, some gamer pics, themes and other extras (trailers, interviews, etc.) I thought this was a great move by BioWare/Microsoft, since they were under no obligation to release any of the extra content, especially with a $20 re-release!

 to BioWare/Microsoft for going the extra mile to give the consumer added value (in a bargain package no less!). Let's hope more companies follow this route.

Uh, Forza 2 had all of its DLC in the Platinum Hits. There was a lot more DLC for it than ME had.

Still a good thing, no doubt, just saying ME isn't the first. :)

Cool.

I've also heard that Gears of War: Platinum Hits version has all the map packs too.

I was merely surprised about this, since I didn't think it was a common practice. Hopefully, it is! :)

I learned that after I bought Forza 2 that the Platinum Hits had all the DLC. I bought it used for $7 but then bought all the DLC which came out to more than $20.

Heh, I bet a lot of people got bit by that.

I didn't know at first, but I read it here in the Forza thread. Worked out well because a friend wanted to me to find a cheap copy online for him, so I found the Platinum Hits version and used the DLC disc before i gave it to him.

How much is all the DLC anyway?

I really hate this DLC instead of expansion pack trend....

It makes me sick.

I don't think I've ever bought a piece of DLC, because it just pisses me off.

It was either $5 or $10.

Why the hatred of DLC?

Because they nickle and dime you for DLC and it comes out to a lot of money. It was good in the PC world. They'd come out with large expansion packs and you'd pay $20 for a lot of content.

This. I don't want to pay $5 or $10 for some bullshit addition that little effort was put into.

In the past they'd come out with real expansions. Expansions that would actually stir interest in the game an make you want to play more (I.E. Tribunal, Bloodmoon, Lord of Destruction, etc). Now they just release lame ass DLC, and charge you up to ass for it.

They make everything cheap, but give you little content. Oh, you want a door? How about $1. Want a new costume? $2. Want a house? $4. Want a little side mission? $10.

When you add it all up, in the past you could have gotten more shit for half the price through an actual expansion pack.

NOT TO MENTION the trend of "day of release" DLC. I.E., we could have put this in the game but want to may you pay extra for shit that should have already been there (horse armor anyone?)

I haven't bought a single piece of DLC. It's a shitty trend that I wish would die, but obviously won't because developers make much more money off it.
