Mass Effect - My thoughts

So I discovered the games and beat them, and already read both books. I'm officially a ME fiend. Rather than make some long winded thoughts, I just wanted to point out some things of what I liked vs didn't like between ME1 vs ME2 (Because as far as I'm concerned, they have some really serious changed in them).

This is in PC gaming because I played the PC versions.

ME1: Fucking awesome. Great doesn't explain it. Characters have really nice textures.....downside? Sloppy textures elsewhere in the game...understandable though. And landing on planets, although fun, does get annoying at times. Oh, and the inventory management system is fucking stupid. To click on each item to sell it is ridiculous....I just want to select as much as I prefer and then sell it without any problems. I spent too much time selling, and converting junk to omnigel.

ME2: Way more different than what I expected it to be. I missed actually building my characters - just getting 4 different categories to improve a character isn't satisfying. I enjoyed the old way more. I also didn't like how I got no variety in weapons. I can understand that it takes more time to build them in, but I didn't really 'think' about guns - whatever I had and was autoselected is what I went with. I also didn't appreciate the change in keystrokes, although I adapted quickly. The main story was much much much longer, although I felt disappointed by the lack of side quests. I really missed that part because I literally spent 2x the time on side quests as I did on the main story.
Oh...and the textures were an overall DOWNGRADE from before. Even the suits look worse! The only realllllllly high res textures were the faces. The enviornments look like they had more polygon detail, and the backgrounds were a little nicer, but the textures just were not fully up to par. But really the most noticeable effect of the downgrade was the fact that my own uniforms were noticably not as sharp as my head, and that several NPCs were just not impressive.
And actually flying the ship was kinda pointless. I thought just selecting with a mouse was more efficient, and far less gimicky. You'd think so many years onward and the graphics would be better....I wouldn't say better ~ they are of a different style. But they were honestly good enough anyways (except the annoying fact that their body armor was nowhere near as sharp as they heads) so I can't complain. It felt much more like a console port than the first did; the least they could have done was put on the higher res textures in the game.

But lastly...the STORY IS SO GOOOOOOOD...which is why I also got both books. They definitely filled in the holes in the stories I'm curious about, and the second creates some more interesting questions. I don't know if it will be answered in ME3, but if not, I'm sure it will arise in the 3rd book. My only gripe with the books is that they are really easy reading....TOOOO easy reading. Perhaps I'm just so used to reading content that is much thicker, but I easily blasted through these 8th grade level reading books.

My hope for the third: make the character leveling system more like the first, give me variety in weapons once more, and ship higher res textures on the PC version (isn't all of the texture art done in high res and then just downsamples for the final set of textures that ship on the disc?)

I just came in to say I thought the inventory management was a pain as well.
People keep comparing it to KOTOR and I dont know why. They are NOTHING alike, aside from the fact you have black background in both of them. And they are full menus, separate from the game as opposed to mini menus within the game (like NWN and NWN2). But I actually prefer full screen menus when they are done properly. BG2 was the best.

I was quite disappointed with ME2 with how much they took away from ME1.

The inventory didn't need to go... what needed to be done was for it to be refined and rethought. Items weren't the problem, it was the interface for selling, comparing, converting to omni-gel, etc.

But truly my biggest disappointment was the skill tree. In ME1 you had something like 15 paths, but in ME2 you have ~6? Lame.

I still like ME2, but I didn't care much for the fact that they took most of the RPG elements and replaced them with shooter elements.

I think in general bioware last couple of titles have dumb-down game mechanics (perhaps for consoles) but have excelled in story telling (this is with regards to both ME-2 and Dragon Age).

Since this combination likely makes dual pc/console development easier and they seem to make lots of money and receive lots of praise; I suspect the trend will continue.

Imho the first play through is enjoyable (the rich story telling) but the actual game mechanics (and therefore multiple replays) rather dull.

I much preferred BG 2 to Dragon Age (and this has NOTHING to do with DND) and ME-1 to ME-2 (though they did improve the combat marginally; very marginal imho) as games.

Oh well such is life.

^Yup. This trend will continue as long as massive filthy piles of cash keep coming to them. As Howard Hughes would have said "The way of the future... the way of the future."

I haven't played 2 yet, but 1 was sufficient Engine Wise and Play Wise, except the Inventory System which definitely needed massive tweaking. Developers should take the cue from Valve. If you're making a multipart series, start and finish on 1 Engine, keep the basic Elements throughout, and just tweaking Graphics or Elements as needed. Saves a lot of time and $ and let's the Developer focus on Art and Story.

I only played ME1, and only on PC. It was clearly a console port... the levels were very simple, there were only a handful of environments used over and over like an NES game. The gameplay was very simple, I'm assuming it was a good balance on Xbox, but it was just EZmode on PC.

The story was great, and I was depressed by the huge buildup of story to just climax and end in a quarter of a second. The side quests were very cool story-wise, but they were just so unpolished and were the same thing over and over.

I hate to complain about the game so much, considering it was so good. I gotta give it an 8/10, coming from a guy that gives every console and mutli platform game a 0/10,000. There was so much in the game that seemed like it was building up to something. Like collecting little trinkets on boring planets. Like oh man, when I get 20 of these, something cool is going to happen! Wrong. Nothing happens. It's over. Uninstall. *sigh* If they had built it for serious gaming on PC it'd have been an epic game. But, it just turns out to be a "good play", one and done.

My first taste of Mass Effect was ME2, and to be honest the changes they made were really the only way I was going to play it. I think for a newbie RPG like myself, the way things are in ME2 is a good introduction. Although if this is an RPG it really isnt any different that something like inFamous or Crackdown. I just had a remedial understanding of the different classes and how to use the powers, but I beat the game, maybe dying a less than 10 times total on normal, and lost no crew members. Once you learn to just spam powers its pretty easy.

The only complaint I have was the whole scanning for minerals thing. It was kinda lame IMO. And I spent so much time building up loyalty (backtracked like 20 times) and upgrading everything, just to go into the
Omega relay and be done 45 minutes later
. Kinda sucked.
I shot the end boss with the Cain when he first stuck his head out, and then like 4 shots in the eyes with a pistol and he was down for the count! I was expecting him to pop back up but then it was cutscene time
. OK, and mapping the spacebar to like 3 different functions was kinda lame too.

It was a good game though...I'll play ME3. They could maybe give the RPG stuff a little more depth, but not go crazy. Get better PC centric control scheme, and lose the planet scanning for minerals (or have an upgrade where its done auto), and next game could be a perfect 10. Maybe they should have a hardcore RPG view and mainstream view like it is now in ME2. That way no one can complain.
