Mass Effect 2 Character Import Question

I didn't want to post in any of the larger threads because I'm afraid of spoilers, and I've already seen one. :( However, a quick question on importing your old character. So I beat ME1 the first time making certain choices and going the paragon route, I'm doing another ME1 playthrough now because I want to refresh myself on the story and see how the other decisions playout - I'm also going the renegade route now. However, I chose to continue my original "carrer" so that I can hit lvl 60 for the achievement. Now, when I choose to import this lvl 60 character, which "choices" and "alignment" will the game use? The ones from the first playthrough, or the second playthrough, or can I choose? I'd rather have my first playthrough choices, and the paragon route as that's how I usually do my first play.

It will use the choices from your latest playthrough only. And you can only import a character from ME1 that has finished a game and not started a new one. So you can't import one that's in the middle of a game, even though it's his/her second playthrough.

EDIT: My bad. I just checked. You are given the option to select which playthrough decisions you want to use. I can select either my lvl57 soldier or my lvl60 soldier. My lvl57 soldier is twice even, as I reloaded and made a different decision about the Council - and it saved it as another playthrough - so I have 2x lvl57 and 1x lvl60 for the same character. So I think you're good to go :)

Nice. Thanks for the heads up.

PC you can definitely use both. Xbox may have glitches. I assume you're on PC though.

K this is awesome! I have no level 60, but I did complete the game. I ended up 50/50 paragon/renegade, well i guess slightly more renegade since the ending slanted that way. But i'm OK with it :)

Anyway, great news, can't wait to play it.

Sort of related so I'll post here. I have been thinking of buying ME2, but it's been a long time since I played ME1 so I'm thinking of playing it through again before I buy ME2. In my first go round I think I was a ... soldier? I remember selecting a "commando" sub-class I think. What class should I choose this time? As I recall I had fun messing around with my teammates' biotics abilities. Should I play as a vanguard this time around? Does it even matter as far as the ME2 character importing is concerned? I'm just looking for a versatile and most importantly fun class.

You can switch classes on import. ME2 vanguard plays quite differently from ME1 version. You may prefer adept until you can unlock the bonus talents that supplement Vanguard... But be warned that in ME2 on any level above Normal, only Warp and Reave (bonus talent) work on shielded or armored enemies -- for other biotic powers you need to blast through their shields/armor first if they have any.

Thanks for the tips s44. Good to know that you can choose a different class in ME2. I sort of expected that some things would be different in the sequel so I don't really mind how the classes play in ME2.

I liked the idea of a Vanguard because I wanted to shoot at things AND toss them up in the air with biotics. Is this not really feasible for the first part of the game (i.e until you unlock bonus talents - it's been so long that I've forgotten how this works)? I read up a little bit on the classes and it looks like you can add a non-class talent at some point in the game. Would it be better to play as an Adept and add some weapon talent at some point?

Weapons aren't really talents, though there's a point where you can pick a top-tier weapon you couldn't otherwise get in lieu of a talent. Your weapon *choices* are restricted by class and I think you can't change this. Vanguards get shotgun; both Adepts and Vanguards get SMG and pistol.

ME2 vanguards do have Pull (the old Lift), but the other talents aren't really good for lift&shoot tactics. You get Shockwave, which blasts/tosses a line in front of you, and Charge, which launches you right into an enemy. This sounds great, but until you have some serious defensive upgrades it's extremely dangerous -- if you're out of cover and exposed to more than one enemy, you're quickly toast, and ME2 enemies are usually in packs. Adepts get Shockwave and two other lifty talents: Throw and Singularity.

On the other hand Vanguards do get ammo talents, which are quite nice and boost all your weapons. By the end of the game you can either take one as a bonus or use a party member with a team ammo talent, though (make sure to activate it on every weapon each squad member has at the beginning of each mission).

Note that you can also quickbar companion talents so you can avoid pausing to fire them off.

Charge is pretty sweet, especially when it's leveled up. Fun to charge, shoot with Cryo, then melee the frozen mob.

I changed classes in ME2. Went from Vanguard to Engineer.

I went ahead and started my new ME1 character as a Vanguard. I'm sure I'll manage, and more importantly I'll probably spend more time with characters I didn't use as much the first go round as a soldier (Tali, Ashley, Wrex, the turian guy whose name I forget).

This is totally the wrong thread for this (again), but is it really worth it to extensively tweak any of the config stuff for ME1 (for the PC)? I'm playing on an X3 720 w/ 2x 4850s (512 MB) in crossfire. For whatever reason the game is not totally smooth at max settings, which I had hoped for/expected.

EDIT: Playing at 1680x1050.

Gah so you can change the story in ME2 with a preload from ME1.

Because i know you can save the council, and not lose anyone, but if you play ME2 from start, it takes the worst possible routes, where you lose both a member and the entire council.

So how much different is the story with a load?
I think ur gonna make me pause ME2... the 2nd time around... and go back to ME1 to do a reload from that...

Gah... need to find my ME1 DVD... and then fight the horrible DRM's associated with it...

If you do not want to play through mass effect 1 again, there is a save editor out there. you can create a save in ME2, then just edit it so that you get the out comes your remember picking from the first game. I think the editor can be obtained from Game copy worlds site.

shotguns are useless in ME2 unless you want to be a meatpuppet

Niku, thanks for the suggestion but I do actually want to play through Mass Effect 1 a while - I had great fun with it the first time through and it's been long enough that I've forgotten most of what happened.

Zerogear, I guess I wasn't clear. My original question was sort of tangential to the original topic of the thread, but close enough that I thought it was worth posting here.

In anticipation of a future purchase of MASS EFFECT 2, I am replaying MASS EFFECT 1. I was asking questions about which class I should play in my replaying of MASS EFFECT 1 since I played as a soldier in my previous play-through of MASS EFFECT 1 a long time ago, and was not familiar with any of the other classes. At the moment I am not particularly concerned about how the classes play in MASS EFFECT 2, as I have learned that you can switch classes in MASS EFFECT 2 if you are importing your character from MASS EFFECT 1. I imagined that many people posting in this thread about importing characters from MASS EFFECT 1 to MASS EFFECT 2 would have played and would be familiar with MASS EFFECT 1 and might have suggestions as to a fun class to play in a second run through MASS EFFECT 1.

...ALL CAPS.

*ahem*
