Started playing ME 1 after purchasing on Steam during the sales. Seems like a great game, just excellent story and voice acting. Here's the problem: I cannot activate the Galaxy Map. After Googling I see tons of pirate types had problems with the Galaxy map, but this is a totally legit Steam purchased game. I walk up to the Galaxy Map and the second line (forget the actual wording) is grayed out. Can't press "E" and use it. Weird. While its a great game, I'm not much of a space genre guy, so if I miss out on this then whatever, but I'm a little disappointed. Perhaps I missed something somewhere?

Maybe an uninstall/reinstall is needed?

try a reinstall, i have had strange problems with many games on steam(not being able to load a level, always hanging same spot, not being able to activate objects pretty much anything)and even when you verify the integrity and it says they are 100% i still had strange issues in games but a fresh install of the game has always solved it for me.

It's been a long while since I played ME1, but it might also be that the game's expecting you to complete something - task/dialog/whatever before it lets you continue?

Where are you storywise?
Known spoiler?
You need to be in command of the ship before you can pick things on the map.

That's probably it, he just needs to keep playing and walking and talking to people and it will work in a while.

The problem pirates had was fixed with a patch and the issue was when you tried to acces galaxy you couldn't click on things.

Before trying the reinstall option, try the Steam verify game file integrity feature.

Some file may have got a bit scrambled on its way to the right place and that might be causing your issue.

Make sure you're at the point in the game where you can use the map. There's a bunch of stuff you've gotta do first before it is accessible.
