I'll answer your question about how many people died because Trump didn't like masks. Not one.
No one was compelled to avoid the practice, it was a choice each person made on their own. It was free will.

But without a leader it's a rudderless non-movement. People are happy to fall for the stupidest shit if they feel they're in a crowd of like-minded people.

Trump's only problem with respect to MAGA is that he never had a vision in the first place, aside from a guy on top of a pile of gold and an adoring crowd.

IMO it's not much of a problem, he could in theory continue to pied-piper them by feeding off their hate. It's the past of least resistance for them.
