Masking IP and MAC

My college has a 2 gig download limit on my internet connection per month. It's $3 for every extra gig after 2. It includes all web activity including email and simple surfing.

I pay $40,000+ for this f*cking college of mine and the last thing that I want is to pay extra money for what should be unlimited internet usage.

I go over 2 gigs in less than a week. Last week I got changed $60. I don't download any MP3s, seriously, because I've heard that there have been five kids caught already in my school for doing that stuff. Now I d/l movies and demos and streaming audio.

Is there any way that I can steal bandwidth from these guys? They track my traffic via MAC and IP address. I know of a guy who set up dual lan on his primary computer and does all his downloading from a secondary computer that's getting the connection from the primary computer (windows internet connection sharing). In this way his secondary computer does not have a registered IP and MAC with the school and he gets free downloads. I tried his same config, and it didn't work.

Any other ideas?

The setup you describe (ICS) would still make it appear to the schools tracking mechanism that the "primary" computer downloaded all the files.
You have to use the IP they give you, and the connected computer must put up a MAC or the networking protocol doesn't work.

In summary:

1> You're screwed
2> Don't try to circumvent the school's accounting or you may end up with no access at all.
3> Smarter people than you have tried and failed. There aren't many options and the Networking crew at your college knows 'em all.

Check into a nice dial-up account.

Good Luck

But the thing is that one dude got his setup to work, and it's like mine except he has a server (which supplies the single IP address) that goes into a hub which branches into three other computers. And all three computers d/l with impunity.

Technically, any way you slice it, you are limited. If he is circumnavigating it, it has nothing to do with technical reasons why. Nobody here is going to help you steal bandwidth. Stop downloading all that pornography and warez, and you won't go over your limit.

Agreed. 2 GB is a severe cap, IMO. Time for you to get busy and find out why it is so low, and see what you can do to raise it legitimately.

Not to be a jerk, but I seriously doubt doing exactly that would do anything to aid the problem. If the hubs gateway is the server, then all the traffic from all the pc's connected to the hub would come from the same college network IP. It just wouldn't work. There really isn't anyway around it, and the few ways that there are seriously aren't worth it.

on a side note..porn?

But a dsl account or cable modem service to steal movies off

to spoof your mac you could use the mac cloning feature present in many of the consumer grade routers. they also allow you to change the ip. an added benefit is that yer computer is safe from the prying eyes of the network police. trouble is, you need to get an unrestricted ip and mac. how about the computer lab? if it's on a different subnet, that might work.

the internet should be as free as the air we breathe. start paying for bandwidth and we'll all soon be like the martians in that arnold schwarznegger film, i forget the title.

ok then...who should pay for the bandwidth if not the users that are using it? hell ill be the first one to admit that as RR user we are lucky..no blocked ports, caps are decent. but if they said tomorrow that is pay per use id do it....as long as the service was still good. i have no problem paying for what i use.

My tipsy proposal for standard response:

There are several ways to be un-affected by these severe limits given to you by a disassociated staff of heartless administrators (both computer related admins and the other kind). Some of these methods are legal, others aren't. I won't bother to cover the illegal methods because if you really want to know them, you will figure them out on your own. :)

First, you can get yourself a DSL/Cable/Dialup/Satellite connection to the net. The nasty administration will not be able to touch you then. The costs are reasonable, the benefits amazing, and the ISPs generally don't care what you do.

Second, you could study instead of downloading movies, or for a real shocker, you can rent the movies at a video rental business.

Third, and my favorite, you can actually talk to the people in your dorm. Yes, there are people there other than you. You might be amazed at the diversity of these other people. Many of them will have different tastes in music, movies, etc than yourself. Setup a method of distributing infringing material between yourselves. Chances are you are only getting charged for the amount of data going through the borders of your network. Sharing between yourself and the others on your floor could very well be "free." It is definitely a great way to find interesting people and introduce yourself to new concepts, ideas, and tastes. There are other added bonuses in co-ed dorms, but that can be discussed else where.

Forth, you can write a letter. This option may also get you some extra credit if you happen to be doing poorly in certain classes. Make sure the letter is much better than the whiney bitch post you made here. Don't demand anything. Don't act like a spoiled brat that is owed the world because you pay a piddly amount of money to infringe on copyrights, consume alcohol, partake in recreational drugs, and practice at the conception of children. No one listens to a whiner. Then again, I am responding to this post so you never know ;)

Anyhow, the letter should include reasons for either upping the cap or removing it totally. Make sure you include reasonable explanations (and not all tech speak!) as to how new rules would help student. Include information and statistics on increased GPA, better social interaction, decreased crime, or any other major topic. A glance through the local paper will help you determine what may be important to the school administration.

Don't forget the money factor. Yes, I think (drunkenly at that!) I mentioned not to whine about how much money your parents spent to put you into this place of higher education, but you should offer ideas on ways to save money on staff, equipment, services, and incidentals for the school network and internet connection. Saving the school administration money will make you a hero to them. If you can find a way to cut down on the expense of high speed internet connections, increase GPA school wide, drive down the frequency of incidentals, and manage to get new porn at the same time, you will be a friggin genius.

Unfortunately, as a student at this school you only see the trees. The school and especially the network administrators see the forest. Discussing this information with them might yield some better information or even enlightenment as to why the current policy is the way it is. Hope that helps, and good luck!

Total Recall, which if I remember correctly was based off of a Philip K. Dick story...

$60 bucks a month would pay for an over priced DSL subscription. $40 would pay for a good one.

my little bro is on a campus network and he also deals with lots of BS. (although no charge per download)

sucks for you, move off campus, get your own conection, as long as your on their T1 you have to do follow thier limitations.

What about electricity, water, phone and all the other utilities you use day in and day out that that you pay according to usage for?

Naysayers? Please! I gave several legitimate ways to change policy. If anyone is unwilling to go about these methods, then they really do not want what they claim to want.

And good fight? Give me a break. Spoiled brats.
