Masking Internet Usage

I recently heard that students at my college are getting in trouble for downloading off programs like kazaa. I am unsure how the school is catching them. Maybe the kids simply shared their MP3 folder over the network, but I don't think it is that simple.

So my question is:

How could one mask what they download?

For example like a router would mask the internal IP addresses?

I don't think I could hook up a router to the school network....that would send up red flags.

I am sure the school could monitor usuage, right? like they could tell if i was downloading a Gig per night?

So is there any way to hide/mask what you do, without letting them know?

If its not encrypted then they can see anything and everything you do. What you download, what sites you visit, everything.

You might want to read the rules of the forum. This kind of question (hacking, disguising use, etc) is frowned upon.

I'm not hacking anything. I am trying to keep my privacy. You should look up the word "hacking".

Would Norton Personal Firewall encrypt data?

You should look up the work "etiquette". Like, etiquette says that you don't come into a forum and tell its members (least of all spidey) what its rules are. Like he said, this question is not appreciated here.

The short answer, in any event, is that there's little you can do to hide yourself if you're on their network. At best you could encrypt your data, though not with Norton. But even then, they could easily monitor your bandwidth and what locations you connect to, even if they can't see precisely what it is you're downloading.

Cleverhandle I looked it up, thanks buddy.

I understand how encrypting actual files work, but how would you encrypt data over a network?
