I just read an article in the New York Times about this city in the United Arab Emirates. Not sure what to think but it sounds pretty impressive. It's built on an elevated foundation to make use of the winds to cool the city (I think it was stated that they could reduce temperature by up to 70 degrees), all electric cars which are underground, city runs almost all on solar power, etc.

Seems like an interesting experiment; pretty neat I think.

They have more money than sense.

It can't be done in real life.

What is to discuss?

Plus, your link needs registration, which is a pretty big fail, in and of itself.

Edit: I see the wikipedia link now.

Didn't need registration when I clicked it, so seems like you're the one failing.

And if you're gonna be a dick at least learn how to use the edit button.

Obv, you have previously registered.

What edit button?

-John

Neither link needs registration.

So does this mean they are running out of oil?

Its a really interesting project. I'm looking forward to seeing how it goes.

Ya'll that don't need to register to the N.Y. Times...

Are you just blindly accepting cookies?

No question, it is asking me to register, but I'm pretty sure I have denied it cookies.

I don't know that its they are running out of oil as much as it is, they've realized they could use it to make some cool stuff. They get good publicity as well, which if you're a country in the Middle East, you're going to need if you want to convince people to go there for tourism and trade.

Like Dubai, they're thinking beyond. This is a very interesting project and I know plenty of countries will be interested in how it turns out.

I see the button now. I wasn't editing my post, I was expanding on it.

Why would I edit it?

-John

So that you don't muck up the thread with tons of stupid posts, but its already too late for that.

Yeah I was tongue in cheek about the oil, I just found it a bit ironic that a country awash in oil is building a city like that.

Whether the project works fully or not I'm sure a lot of lessons will be learnt that can be applied in more common scenarios.

Well it is a fact that they will start to run out. I believe the UAE has actually been worried about their supply of oil, and knowing that eventually they'll have to deal with it, so they decided to get a head start in thinking about what to do beyond that. Plus, due to their geography, they face an interesting challenge in trying to handle modern city in that position. As the Europe and the US is finding out, sometimes its just best to start from the ground up instead of trying to build upon infrastructure that could be hundreds of years old.
