Maryland-College Park Area?

I've finally decided to go to the University of Maryland at College Park, but I need to find off campus housing and I don't know the area well at all. Is anybody from there or go to school there that knows where around the campus is an ok place to live?

check their website... they should have something like an office of off-campus living that willl guide you to some decent stuff.

good luck, the college park/greenbelt neighborhoods are kinda sketchy.

Yea, that's what I have heard. I can get on campus second semester, but that still leaves me high and dry for first. All that the off campus housing office will tell me is to go look at crime stats. They won't even tell me their opinions or anything. None of that helps since I am from MN, makes it a little harder to look around.

First, try the Office of Commuter Affairs. You should be able to find some housing listings.

Second, check out the Shuttle UM page. If you don't have a car on campus, make sure the place you live is either close to school, a metro stop, or a shuttle UM stop.

Edit: Also, try the Diamondback, the school newspaper. It shoudl have some listings online.

Edit again: here you go, seems like a few listings for one room.

Crap edit again: After rereading, I guess you were looking for a general feel of where to live. South of campus, by knox rd., around the 'knox boxes' and 'terp towers' have been the hot spots for recent crime. Further south of that, I don't know. North of campus (Metzerot rd) wasn't bad, I lived there for a year, no problems. Head further north towards adelphi, and it gets not so nice. If you head East towards greenbelt, any place behind greenbelt mall (aka ghetto plaza) is cheap, but not very nice (so I've heard). South of the mall, across greenbelt rd, has a lot of college housing. Haven't heard anything bad from there. West of campus is a golf course, beyond that I have no idea.

Crap edit again summary: Look north of campus, close to campus, or NE, south of the greenbelt mall.

Lemme know if you need anymore help. (Recent UM grad).
