When buying motherboards, how can I tell if the sata ports are Marvell or Intel. for best SSD performance?

Your manual will tell you. Usually the Intel ones are in the same block. Usually 6, sometimes 4 or less.

The alternate port(s) is usually set apart from the Intel ones and usually a different colour.
 
Look at the description and the illustration on the board. Intel ports will be grouped together and 3rd party ports usually appear as add-ons next to the native ports. Many times they will have a different color to distinguish them apart but look at the manual to be sure and of course plug into the Intel ports first with your boot and optical drives..
