1. he's a telepath and can control people's minds... he could roll into a bank and be like "ok give me a $1 billion loan and i won't pay it back"

2. he probably knew but didn't care (would you?)
 
To get money for the school, I believe he "coerced" people into donating it to him. Or he might have inherited it from someone. But either way, he used his mental powers to get it.
