I played for a little while last night, despite the lack of Free Candy (expired!).

FYI, last night 2 other codes were working: RUNE1 and RUNE2 for a couple of boosts

So far I think DC Universe Online has higher production values and a better story, but if you prefer Marvel you might enjoy this more. DCU also work more like other MMOs in that you have 2 character slots and you can just delete an existing character if you want to try something new.

OK, thanks. I killed the first boss--Black Cat, I think? And it dropped 100 eternity splinters...I assumed that was some default drop, so I was planning on starting a bunch of those starter toons and getting 400 so that I could buy Jean Grey, but I have no character selection screen. :\

I guess there is some super drop rate of quality items going on right now. Getting piles of shit--not sure what do with it. Got a level 11 cosmic belt...should one get cosmic drops at such a low level, normally?

So save those 100 from black cat, and you'll get another 100 or 200 when you reach the end of the story the first time through. If you stay around for that long.

With the boosted drop rate, and if you redeemed the 2 rune codes you could have gotten even more boosts. They do give you a once a day boost on the first boss you fight of the day to get even higher drop rates on stuff.

So almost all newbs I've played get a cosmic around 10-12, and most of the later ones have gotten a unique around 15 and 20.

I started Invisible Woman last night, and got a cosmic around level 11, another at 13, first unique was level 14, but I was 15 when I got it. 2nd unique was around level 20 and it was level 19. Got a another copy of the first one around level 30, and a new unique one I hadn't seen yet around level 40.

At that point I used the crafting system to update the 2 lower level ones up to level 40, so I had 3 level 40 uniques.

The crafting system is very good in the game. If you aren't running around with all purple equipment, then you need to check it out. For very cheap you can convert a blue item to a purple, just using the credits you've picked up, and crafting components if you've been collecting those.

By the end of the night I was level 58, with 4 uniques, 1 cosmic, a legendary I passed on from another hero, and the other slots filled in as well.

Having played over 900 hours, I skip a lot of the story now, and use the extra things like training room, and midtown, and legendary quests to level with.

I always do the Black Cat, and the prison break quests at the beginning, because they seem to drop cosmics, pretty often.

yeah, i've been upgrading with crafting. basically donating everything that drops to the crafter.

for whatever reason, though, it stopped letting me upgrade any of my purple items? Correct level of item for recipe, correct bits and pieces, it just want let me add the armor piece to the craft slot. I don't get it.

assume it's just another bug--one of the maps locked on me last night when the tablet in chapter 1? wouldn't spawn as accessible. The Cloak NPC was already spawned, and so I couldn't trigger Doc Oc.

You are limited by the level of your crafter. The level of equipment you can upgrade is tied to their level. That's the only time I've had it not work, with the mentioned symptoms.

And that's the first I've heard of it being broken at Cloak. I've had it not work later on in chapter 3, but redoing the mission, it worked the next time.

yeah, i found this problem on the forum. someone partied up to reset the instance and that fixed things.

funny thing--i mention in chat that i'm level 7, just started, can't change difficulty blah blah, no character select...and that is every piece of advice i get. and then no one believes I just started playing and am not level 20. also: "GO level!" uh...I can't. the mission is stuck and I cant' progress :|

...good to see these online communities never change. :D

Just in case any of you feel like finding me for some silly reason. I'm usually off running Midtown trying to save up splinters.

Usually running either midtown or legendaries. gathering splinters, leveling legendaries, and farming odin currency.

For the new people, I can probably help a couple level their crafters up a bit, I think. I have a ton of higher level artifacts, that should gain a few crafter levels.

they have 3 "tiers" of heroes, that can cost from 200-450 of those splinters. I believe they give you 200 of them the first time you take down Doom.

My numbers were a bit off there. 3 tiers, 200,400 and 600 splinters.

Though I find a lot of the 400 splinter tier are better than the 600 tier.

But Storm a 200 splinter, is one of the best in the game. So the pricing tiers seem to be off to me.

I've been playing a bit more and one part is really annoying at times: the quest list

Am I missing a key to get more details?

Eyes of Shield - talk to agent foo.

That's it. Nothing to tell you that he's 3 maps away in Lowtown, not in your current location of Buccaneer Beach.

Bamboo Forest - Talk to the village elder

Where? Nothing marked on the map, no orange pointer, and he's nowhere on the map I've found by wandering.

I shouldn't have to do a Google search to pick up a quest reward. Grrrr.

Press "L".

Also, some of the quest locations won't show up on the map "radar" until you get "close enough" for them to pop on the radar as well. It's kind of like a game of hide and seek for those ones that don't have the pins in the map right from the get-go. Just keep running around slaughtering innocent henchmen until you find it.

Also pressing TAB to bring up the big map, gives a much broader range on showing stuff further away from you. So pop TAB, see if it shows up, and that will give you a pointer to where to go. Still a lot of times they are off the range of that.

Leave behind a bloody trail of idiots behind, that got in your way as you were trying to figure out where to go.

I would love to level up my crafter if you have some trash! I have no idea how to add/chat with people not in the chat window right now.

actually having more fun with this one than with more recent looty games. Though, it's a bit messy and chaotic at times--when random events happen, that timer up at the top, it would be nice to get a better idea of where that is happening.

got a few uniques today running around midtown and facerolling mobs because normal difficulty is sad.

So I've played captain america up to level 8. The game is fun, but I have to admit it seems rather confusing. I have no clue where I'm going half the time, or what most the stuff I'm picking up is for. Where do I find my crafters? I normally play Diablo III and LOTRO, but even after those this game seems confusing for some reason. Maybe I just need to play more.

Yes, the game only has a "general direction" when it comes to the story mode. For example, when you get to Stryker's Base or The Savage Lands, you'll probably spend a LOT of time trying to figure out how the heck to get to the next part of the zone...

Here's a hint - follow the edges of the zone maps until you find a teeny tiny little bridge or path between the area you're in and the next area. One other thing to note is that the maps are semi-random and do change from time to time it seems. The entrance to a given area will sometimes be on the east side of the map on one play session, and on the north side on another, etc.

There are a few areas that are rather open-worldy and some that are sort of hand-holdy on how it takes you from mission to mission. The open-worldy ones can be rather frustrating.

Crafters will always be in the main hubs - Stark/Avengers Tower, Xavier's School, SHIELD Hellicarrier, Odin's Palace. There's always a "Crafter" and an "Asgardian Enchanter", both of which you'll want to level up by dumping crap on.

so it seems that the "gear" vendors are basically worthless, right? I'm now annoyed that I leveled some of them up to ~2 before realizing that.

lol, I didn't even know you could level them up.

I haven't looked to see what you can do with them, but they might have the occasional thing on them worthwhile. Really though you're just going to use drops, gunning for cosmics, uniques and saving up for legendaries.

At least the Crafter and Enchanter levels are shared between all crafters -- so if you level up Pym in the Avengers tower it counts towards Forge in the X-Men base too.

It's still annoying to have to hunt for where to turn in quest rewards, since the people are usually not marked on the tab map and don't get the orange pointer either.

I'm guessing this was always F2P, so it never had the budget for polishing the game that subscription games like DC Universe, Star Trek and Star Wars TOR had before going F2P. It has more of a shoestring feel to it.

I'll look you up this evening. I play Pacific time, usually login around 7:00-7:30 for a bit, then later as well.

I was mostly offline this weekend rebuilding my computer, because my new graphics card wouldn't fit in the old case.

And the vendors aren't totally useless if you have a ton of heroes. By level 8 or so they can have purple gear, and by 18 they can have artifacts. So checking them when you log a hero in to see if they have a useful artifact you've been trying to get is decent. But crafter to max first is the way to go.

Bringing up the big map with the TAB key will show you symbols that overtime you get to remember what they mean.

Later is when I usually play. But I login around 7, and run a legendary or two with storm. She is a beast for flying to the end and completing things.

So here is how the new splinter playthrough works: 100 splinters for finishing prologue (kill Black Cat), and 100 for beating Doom. So, it's 200 free splinters for your first playthrough on your account.

I had 276 or so at that point, wasn't about to go farm like mad--because I was getting tired of Black Widow--so I went and bought Jean Grey. ...she's fun.

Bought a random Hero Box, got Captain America. :(

I have enough G's to get another hero, and I'm not sure who to go for next. I do want a tanky character, and I've always been a fan of Hulk, so I think I would prefer him over Thing or Colossus. And it looks like Iron Man would be quite fun. Next is Nightcrawler--looks like a blast to play and the type of class that I tend to prefer, and maybe better at doing the Black Widow stuff that I've been using Black Widow for--stealth and mele.

I'll probably just save up splinters until I get bored with leveling these 2 characters (not sure if I'll ever play Captain) for one more hero that I want, or just keep doing the random box. That's not a bad deal, really.

Oh--a single shared bag for all of your characters?

Captain America is actually one of the better ones. Jean Grey is pretty good as well.

Dead Pool is one of the most solid end game survival ones out there, if you spec his melee/defense builds.

Though for overall badassedness, Storm can literally clean the whole screen up in a few seconds. Endgame specced for crit, and blessed for boss damage, she is really a force of nature.

Yeah, they got me there, I invested a few hundred G's in storage space.

@zinfamous I saw you on the night before last, hanging out in Hells Kitchen, then switching back to midtown. You didn't respond to a couple whispers, but there's always more chances.

And new event this weekend:
Redeem Mystery Code: BOUNTY
