'Martyrdom' graduation sashes incite violence?

Muslim members of the University of California, Irvine's graduating class will wear green sashes emblazoned with the word "shahada" in Arabic along with their commencement robes in Saturday's ceremony ? a reference some say is an incitement to violence that should not be allowed.

"Shahada" can be translated several ways, including as a declaration of faith in Islam, but it often is used in reference to "martyrdom" ? especially martyrdom attained by suicide bombers.

Sally Peterson, dean of students at UCI, defended the university against critics who say the school shouldn't allow such a display.

Peterson admits the word "shahada," besides being a reference to Islam, "has also taken on many other meanings depending on where you sit. For some it is seen as 'kill all Jews' or it is seen as a reference to suicide bombers," she said.

Despite different meanings applied to the Arabic word, the administrator said UCI is not permitted to limit the Muslim Student Union members' freedom to wear the sashes.

"This is a public university, and we are not permitted ? no matter how offensive the speech ? not to allow it or we are violating the First Amendment," Peterson said, emphasizing, "Just because we support [the students'] free speech does not mean we support the content."

"It's clearly a violation of free speech if we do not permit it," Peterson said. "There has been significant case law to back this up."

Of 4,000 undergraduates, Peterson said she expects at the most 11 Muslim seniors to wear the sashes.

She says some complainants have said the MSU is a "front for a terrorist organization" ? a charge she says highly upsets the students in the group.

Columnist Arnold Steinberg wrote in FrontPage last week that Muslim students at UC Irvine recently wore green armbands to support Hamas, a Middle East terrorist organization.

"The leaders of Jewish campus organizations protested in vain to the politically correct administration, which is (or pretends to be) unfamiliar with Hamas' charter," he wrote.

"The MSU also has displayed posters on campus that equate the Star of David with the Swastika."

Steinberg says Jewish groups have tried to get the school's administration to take responsibility for what he says are incendiary speeches by Muslim activists.

"Leaders of Hillel and other Jewish groups on campus have requested the administration record the speakers MSU and SAS [Society of Arab Students] bring to campus," he wrote. "The administration refused their request, even though the guests of MSU and SAS have reportedly called for an Islamic revolution in America and for supporting Hamas in its war against 'Zionists' ? and Western civilization."

I didn't... Did you wear an arm band in support of a hostile terrorist organization responsible for killing innocent people?

Not exactly, but kind of.... They don't beleive in killing innocents but they do support armed rebellion in the US. Mostly we just get together and bitch about the man.

AIM is the American Indian Movement

Yes the one Rage Against the Machine is always ranting about.

Off to France with you now.

So what are these other "meanings"? The article points out some negative ones, but gives the impression that there are more. I mean, the word "i love you" has many meanings, if you get up in the face of a Brit for using it you're gonna look kinda stupid.

Being a Muslim student AT UCI....

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHA

IF you take "shahadah" as meaning "kill all jews" you are pretty stupid.

I guess there are variuos meanings(however none that i have heard could mean "kill all jews". I want to see something that proves it, beyond the baseless accustaion of the dean saying "it COULD mean..."), but the first and foremost is an affirmation of your faith in Islam. If you are going to convert to Islam you declare the "shahadah" which is that there is no God but God, and Muahmmad is his prophet (along the lines of that)

If you actually want to contrue it as "kill all jews" or "go suicide bombers" that is absolutely ridiculous

Then again I'm suprised sometihng like this gets posted (of all places, UCI...) and no one posted anything on how someone destroyed the anti-aparteid wall erected by the Society of Arab Students (SAS i think) in opposition of Isreali Policies towards the Palestinians

I'm not part of either group (though I'll probably get more into MSU just because I'm dorming with 4 bros who are a part of it next year) and I tend to keep religion to myself, but to complain about something like this would be even worse than complaining about Christians who pray at the flag pole (which i haven't seen people oppose)

Oh- the article makes it sound like SAS and MSU are some radical fringe groups....far from it- and the people running them are smart too. While sometimes I may disagree as to who they invite to speak (they invited some guy who was pretty right wing, probably just because they knew he would attract attention...moderation really doesn't grab people's attention anymore. IIRC, if you would avoid the topic of Isreal you would get him and Falwell to probably see eye to eye), these people are just passionate about what they beleive.

And Alchemize: meeting people you disagree with, and are not similar to you...god forbid that

This whole situation is just garbage to begin with, people really gripe about the stupidest things these days.

I found the same story at freerepublic, frontpagemag, and gravett.org....all the usual places right-wingers go to stoke the fires of moral outrage on a daily basis.

I don't care whatever the hell it means. Freedom of Speech is Freedom of Speech. I can hardly believe that a word emblazoned on a sash constitutes such a profoundly grave offense to people that catching a glance of it for a bit under two hours will cause some sort of psychological pain or suffering.

Could you imagine if they were allowed to wear little Swastikas or the star of David on a arm band.. A graduation like that could get pretty exciting.

Wouldnt this fall under political correctness?

How can this country be so critical of political correctness for some people but not for others?

We had to change the name of "Operation Infinite Justice" becuse the name offended Muslims, if that can offend someone, a term that could even possibly be translated to any of the above stated terms would offend the hell out of a lot of people.

We are either politically correct as to not offend anyone, or we let people do/say as they please, but we can not do both.

Damn the liberals who try to make your children think and expand their narrow little minds.

"Damn the liberals who try to use the 'separation clause' to prohibit children from wearing religious symbols, like a crucifix, to public schools, too."

I have no problem with their right to wear such an armband, but I do have a problem with selective prohibition. Take for examples when college republicans plan bake sales.

At some schools, it seems that free speech is only acceptable if you do not fit the following criteria: white, christian, rich, republican and male.

University of Washington Bake Sale - shut down by campus police when individuals threatened members of the campus republicans. Why not arrest the offendors?
Whittier College Conservative Newspaper - shut down by campus officials
Steven Hinkle - disciplined by Cal Poly officials for posting a flyer of an upcoming talk by a black conservative
Citrus College - Students were offered extra credit for writing letters protesting the war in Iraq. Students who agreed with it? No credit.
UC - Berkeley - The course "The Politics and Poetics of Palestinian Resistance" description stated "conservative thinkers are encouraged to seek other sections."
Roger Williams University - When the conservative paper criticized the lack of diversity among campus speakers, the university president accused edirtors of "flirting with racist and anti-Islamic rhetoric"
Gonzaga University - College Republicans were disciplined for posting flyers for a speach by Dan Flynn concerning his book Why The Left Hates America
Metro State College - an instructor accused a student of being racist and violent when he wore his army uniform to class. The professor went on to say the uniform was an "offense to the class"
Bucknell University - at a meeting discussing a conservative newspaper, in a meeting including school administration to discuss two articles dealing with free speech. Opposition students threatened newspaper members with physical harm, but the newspaper representatives were removed from the meeting, not the offending students.
University of Missouri - a BIOLOGY professor gave extra credit to students who protested a speech by David Horowitz.

It seems liberal thought is rewarded and conservative thought punished at our universities. I reiterate, free speech only applies to some.

Exactly, sir; diversity, but not diversity of thought...sort of hurts the indoctrination efforts once everyone learns to challenge convention.
