Needed a new washer drier combo today. Went to the store to buy. Found a nice set for $1700, on sale for 15% off....then I ended up getting it for $1300. Found a small dent and they took another $100 off.

$1200 for the set after asking price was $1700.

Wait, you guys are taking the listed MSRP at stores as the price and thinking you got amazing deals? You guys know they inflate the hell out of that and rely on sales as the actual price, right? This way they can claim huge discounts to get people in store.

Never pay retail price for anything. If it's not on sale this will, it will be next week. The retail prices they put on things are always over inflated to make it seem like you are getting a great price when you buy something. Lessens the psychological pain of the purchase.

Yep Yep.

MSRP is fantastic for resale though, "Look it retails for $5,500!"

If its "damaged" due to wear or if its store display ask at least 10% off.

I bought an LG red front loader set. Dryer brand new for $249, washer was $600 after a short haggle for a display model. I can imagine they still made money off of me. "Retail" was something like $2800 for them. I feel bad if folks are getting hosed by the whole discount phenomenon, not like that hasn't been going on in the appliance realm for forever.

With dented items get a manager and throw a number at them. I picked up a floor model Maytag stainless inside and out dishwasher that retails for like 650 for 250 bucks one night from Menards. It had a very small dent in the lower right hand corner. Got the manager over there, gave him my number, he thought about it for a second. Then agreed to the price. A lot of times they just want to move the item off their floor.

This is 100% not true.

Manufacturers set the MAP. In general on appliance you are looking at around 20% margin. Some are higher, some are lower depending on the situation and product. At the appliance store I used to work at, we were in deep with Whirlpool. We would commit to buy a very large number of pieces and had a nice margin to work with on them. But if you wanted a GE, we had maybe 10%.

There were also times the manufacturers would drop the cost of certain models to boost sales or clear them out. A lot of manufacturers also cover the damage allowances. That is the $100 the OP got for the dent. Its cheaper for them to pay out $100 than to send a repair guy out to replace parts, so its very common and negotiated into most buying contracts.

I did over 8 years managing the appliance and electronics business. But its great that ignorant people like you continue to post shit that you read on facebook.

Just picked up a dryer (not a "drier") on Friday night myself.
Went to the local Sears outlet store (scratch and dent, display)
$950 dryer, $450 out the door. Not a scratch or mark on the thing.

They closed the one of those that we used to have. I loved buying stuff from there. Same warranty as something you pay full retail for.

lol...I hear ya. I'm a deal whore, so I see something shiny on a deal and I have this deep, dark need to have it. I will find a way to justify spending the money. Then something breaks that I need and I will find a way to justify not spending the money...

Well, since there are only like 2 major manufacturers anymore, there's really very little competition in the market.

You can usually get waster/dryer sets on craigslist dirt cheap. Appliances are heavily marked up like furniture. But if you try to purchase this from someone else they are willing to take a price hit due to the cost of moving. They just want the shit gone.

like when I went to get my mattress, the store was having 50% off sale. it was 50% off the MSRP not the actual selling price. I saw the same mattress for the same "sale" price at other stores. So there was no sale. fucking ripoff.

From appliance shopping, I've noticed that manufacturers will offer increased quality at a certain price point. Below that quality point, everything is the same. The price sometimes isn't.

So, it's hard to understand when you buy something if you are getting a good value. Most Frigidaire "gallery" series are the ones that have more quality parts, fit & finish. GE "Profile", Kenmore "Elite", etc. You might find a non "quality" product but it is maybe just as expensive as their fancy version or even more....don't mistake that for getting increased quality.

Price doesn't always = quality
