Holly fuck I remember that program! Corny and cheap and boy did he overdo his "passion" for getting out sky watching new to you. But you know what it worked!

Oh right. And he always said "Mark <insert date> on your calendars" didn't he? Almost like it was a slogan of his.

yeah, I forgot about that. lol. It is ingrained in your subconscious.

I was trying to find a photo of him sliding down a comet, or zinging around Saturn's rings (those are available), but I figured the salute was more appropriate for the thread title.

Thanks for the links! Yeah the sky crane system has me worried. Especially considering the success they now have had with the airbag systems. But they design these things so far in advance that there was no way to change any of this by the time of Sojourner, Odyssey, and Spirits successes.
The issue with MSL is that it's just too damn big for the airbag landing system. The airbags for Soujouner and the MERs were made of Vectran, which is some kind of ridiculously strong fabric material, and even that did have some known vulnerabilities - hitting a properly-shaped rock at just the right location on the airbags would have potentially ruptured them, so they tried to select landing sites that looked relatively free of large pieces. And of course, the MERs couldn't easily traverse extremely rugged terrain. But they were about at the limit of what could be safely landed using airbags.

I wonder if Opportunity will still be alive and kicking once MSL lands? :)
