DALLAS -- Add another fine to Mark Cuban's collection.

The outspoken Mavericks owner has been hit with a $100,000 fine for comments about the officiating after a Nov. 15 game, three NBA sources told The Dallas Morning News on Saturday.

The NBA never released the Cuban fine, but the three sources confirmed it to the newspaper. Following Saturday's game against Orlando, Cuban denied that he was fined.

Cuban went through the entire 2002-03 season without a publicly-announced fine. However, after he openly questioned numerous calls after the Mavericks' overtime loss in Memphis, the league hit Cuban with the penalty.

On Saturday, Mavs coach Don Nelson was fined $7,500 by the NBA for publicly criticizing officials. The fine was levied by Stu Jackson, NBA senior vice president of basketball operations.

Nelson had questioned how Danny Fortson might be affected by referees watching him differently after his three-game suspension for a flagrant foul against Zarko Cabarkapa of Phoenix.

The coach said Eduardo Najera is still being treated differently since a one-game suspension in February for bumping an official.

It's a private organization, much like this forum. I don't agree with it but the bill of rights doesn't really apply.

This is pretty common for him. On the other hand, it is worth noting that Mark Cuban matches his fine with a charity donation. He's been doing it for years.

 for Cuban. He's a good guy

Since the NBA, the source of the fine, is not a government body, how is this a freedom of speech issue?

he's perfectly aware of the consequences of publicly criticizing the NBA officials.

i think he's cool, but i don't think he's being horribly oppressed.

If they can fine him, that must mean he signed some contract, right?
So it's his own dang fault he's getting fined.

When you voluntarily join an organization that says criticism of officials will result in fines, you kinda lose a part of your freedom of speech.

Go on the record publicly criticizing your boss and co-workers. Let me know how you make out.

You're right in that respect. It just seems unfair that he gets fined $100K for just speaking his mind though.

He(and others) wouldnt have to criticize the refs if the NBA would wake the fvck up and start doing something about the poor officating.

you have to remember that this is not his first time doing this. he has money, so he blatantly disregards the NBA's policies. he knows the fines are a drop in the bucket for him, so he just blurts out whenever he feels like it.

it is fair.

they have strict rules and he blatantly disobeys them.

Yea I know it's not his first time doing this. He stayed clean all last season (IIRC). If no one speaks out or speaks up against the voice of oppression, the NBA will keep screwing up games by bad officiating or whatnot. If that was anyone but Mark Cuban he would have gotten away with no fine, but it's because of his past that he's blatantly targeted and fined huge amounts.

the guy has massed around $1 million in fines from the NBA.

i'm not sure what he said to warrant the fine, but you'd think he'd learn his lesson by now.

Cuban's worth something like 6 billion (sold his company, Broadcast.com to Yahoo for $5.7 billion in 1999, then later that year liquidated almost all of his tech stock, before the tech slide).

Fining him $100,000 is like fining a millionaire roughly twenty bucks. :)
