So now that Steve Mariucci is out as the 49ers head coach there is one remaining question sure to be on the minds of 49ers fans: who will the next head coach be? That remains to be unveiled but talk shows and internet sites have already weighed in with their opinions. Early names in the media rumor mill include former 49ers assistant and Vikings head coach Dennis Green, but the bottom line is that the 49ers are just now developing the list. Donahue will receive help from Bill Walsh and John McVay in putting together the list of coaching candidates.

Bah, after all Mariucci did for these guy's :|. It's being said that the players don't like this move one bit, and that injuries were the biggest problem for the team this year. Linebackers playing safety, safeties playing corner, they were doomed with or without Mariucci in their last playoff game. Oh well, maybe next year 😀.

he still gets paid for next year. i bet he will be a commentator for nbc or something... then next year someone will come calling.

He's a good coach. It also looks like management framed his firing, saying he asked for more control but Mariucci says it never happened. I think they are making him a scapegoat for lack of advancement in playoffs when what they should really do is draft/sign some decent defensive players. You cannot win in the NFL playoffs being a one-sided team. When the 49'ers take a step back because a new coach means new assistants, players, and a new system, maybe their bone headed management will own up to their mistake.

I think this is a repost but good ridens. That guy could'nt modivate a lead ball out of a wet paper bag. He was and excellent technician though...He'll make a good O coordinator somewhere.

Injuries are NOT an excuse. Look at what the eagles have done without their QB. Luckily they got McNabb back for the playoffs. Another team that has survived with injuries is the Titans.

Great teams win with injuries.

BTW, I think Mariucci was a pretty good coach. I just don't know if he had what it takes to take a team to the super bowl.

Name one good coach the Lions have had in the past 30 years. Here are some names to choose from:

Wayne Fontes
Bobby Ross
Marty Mornhinweg
Darryl Rogers
Monte Clark
Gary Moeller

Need I go on?

Like?

Barry Sanders. They forced that man into earlier retirement because they wouldn't give him up. Barry Sanders is the only reason that team ever had wins during those years.......

Whatever. The Lions never "ruined" him. He was awesome. He consistently put up GREAT numbers. But HE chose to retire when he did. He also left his team out to dry by waiting until the day he was supposed to report to training camp to let everyone know he wasn't coming back. It sure would have been nice of him to tell the Lions BEFORE the draft. Not to mention the two times he held the Lions hostage by holding out during contract negotiations.

If I were the Lions, I wouldn't have traded him either. He dug his own grave. If he wanted to be traded, the way he went about telling everyone was piss-poor.

I agree w codewizard they did ruin him. Not only did they not provide a line worth a crap they ran the run-n-shoot without full back protection....All the opposing defences would do is key on sanders and hit wheather he carried the ball or not just to be safe. He took a beating always and just got feed up and they would'nt trade him. Sad story really...If he ws on the Dallas team during that time we'd see 3000 yard seasons..No joke he was that good.

too bad about mooch. But it was coming. Clashing with the leagues best wide reciever, being too conservative, and then taking a new with almost 50 seconds left last sunday. Not a good idea. I thank him for his winning season and NFC West title.
