<< First off, I am as big of a hockey fan as you'll find. I've always liked Lemieux, though not a Penguins fan. It is my belief he is the best player ever, as in most talented, but not "greatest". Anyone who argues anyone was "GREATER" than Gretzky, is kidding themselves. Nobody did more for the game and had a bigger impact.

I think you've got a good point there. True, Gretzky holds all the records and is "the" name in hockey, but Lemiuex was magic to watch on the ice. I'm not exactly sure why he never got to the same status as Gretzky. Course I was young when Gretzky was all that and I didn't pay much attention to hockey then. >>
It's all about stats. Lemieux had injury problems throughout his career, he did not play in a "MAJOR" market like Gretzky (as in Los Angeles and then New York, compared to Pittsburgh..EDM was not a major market), Lemieux did not have near the talent around him. When Gretz was playing with the likes of Kurri and friends, Lemieux had Rob Brown, Troy Loney and Warren Young. You do the math. Obviously once Jagr, Recchi, etc came around, he had people to play with, but by then Hodgkins was taking a huge effect. Mario scored 199 pts with Robbie Brown and Warren Young. That is simply amazing. Gretzky had 212(i think) playing on the talent filled Oilers.
I don't like to play the IF game, but if you put these 2 on an even playing field, a healthy Lemieux would have just as many if not more points than Gretzky. Just my 2 cents.
