My only major complaint is that Grand Prix is limited to one player. Didn't all of the previous games allow for two players in Grand Prix? I know MK😀D did.
It sucks having to do VS. over and over again if I want to race with the woman, because I'm not really completing anything.

I love the game and can't get enough of it. I must have some kind of battered wife syndrome because the game can be downright harsh sometimes, yet I keep coming back. More often that I'd care to count, I've been sent from 1st place to 12th by a series of unfortunate events?
huh? theres up to 4 way multiplayer available for the Grand Prix. Or are you just complaining that it takes longer to unlock things? If so, my and my GF just took turns on the single player.. It's really not that bad..

The Mario Kart franchise is getting kind of old and tired. It was neat up until the Gamecube version but it's basically the same thing over and over and over and over and over and over and over. They should just make a Mario Kart game every time they release a nintendo console and bundle it with it. Save everybody the time and money.

in that case, just take turns.. its really not so bad. The only other mario kart I've played was the SNES version and as far as I know, to unlock the later cups you had to win on your own in single player.. Gamers today are spoiled, want everything easy and upfront..

I own the game, I love it. I just wish we could play Grand Prix together, at the same time. Please don't tell me how I should or should not play games. Taking turns is lame, and doesn't accomplish what I'm looking for.

Two things... no wait three things that have irked me somewhat about the game and the fact that it was excluded / changed is like what many said....
Item frequency balance. Combine that to way too short of number of laps (especially compared to the SNES version) and how the hell is one supposed to be any good or recover in time. Racing in iterations beyond the SNES feels way too short in comparison.
Battle mode. Balloons basically mean JACK SQUAT? The DS at least made multiple balloons a bit engrossing by having to recover by blowing extras in time. At least possibly some control mechanism be made to "pump" the balloons could add something maybe...

eh, I enjoyed it. Not it's best iteration... I stand by the original, but it's fun. I don't mind unlocking things on my own... what sucks is when I want to play with those unlocks, I can only do so on my system. I can't go over to a friend's house and play them. Ditto w/ SSBB... so damn annoying.

I agree that Nintendo's multiplayer-centric games really need an arcade/everything unlocked mode. Just make it so that, when you're playing with more than one controller physically hooked up, you can select anyone.
Call Of Duty 4 on the Xbox 360 has an excellent method for this. When you're playing split-screen multiplayer (which is local only, no split screen online), you can choose one of a ton of different classes, all of which are very well balanced. Instead of forcing you to get to level 55 to unlock every bloody weapon and perk, they just give you a bunch of intelligently made presets (all of which are way better than the 5 themed classes you're given when you first start playing online multiplayer) that anyone can select. If you play online, you have to earn those perks, but there's no requirement that you unlock stuff if you want to just buy the game and bring it to a party.

I would like the game more if they completely abandoned the squid and the "hot potato" lightening bolt items. I also think that the limited number of tracks is kind of a bummer, too. The tracks from the SNES version are kinda dumb as they just aren't the same when they are in true 3D. Don't get me wrong, the game was great, but it just feels like it's 2/3 the game it should be.
Finally, the first Mario Kart was absolutely ridiculous with the AI Sympathy... 5 iterations later and it's just as bad as it was to start with. There's nothing like having a near perfect race only to have 2 or 3 AI losers zoom by you towards the end of the final lap after getting bombarded with 3 straight items.
